MANAGEMENT OF DIASTEMA /

GAPPED TEETH

DONE BY :ABDULAZIZ TALEB ALSHAMMARI

Management start with
 Treatment for a diastema starts with a
consultation with an orthodontist, who will do an
evaluation and determine if treatment should
proceed. If you are ready for treatment, the
orthodontist will take impressions of your teeth to
make study casts, do a detailed clinical exam, take
a series of facial and dental pictures, and take a full
series of radiographs (X-rays), including panoramic
and side head views.
 :Treatment options include
 Do nothing and enjoy the characterization of your
personality while smiling.
 Orthodontic treatment for a diastema that is the only
orthodontic problem can consist of one or more of these
options:
 Full braces on only the upper teeth
 Partial braces on only some of the upper teeth
 A removable appliance similar to a retainer
…CONT
 Use of porcelain veneers. These are micro thin
pieces of porcelain that are bonded to the
outside of the tooth. Also known as Instant
Orthodontics.
 Through advancements of adhesive dental
technology, our cosmetic dentists can give many
patients the extreme makeover they always
wanted without having to wear braces for several
years.
 Instant Orthodontics (or "Instant Ortho") is a
new term coined to describe the process of using
porcelain veneers, crowns, and/or bridges to
correct modest to extreme missing or crowded
teeth. The process can take as little as three
weeks.
 Missing Tooth Replacement -- If a diastema is
caused by a missing tooth, a dental
bridge or dental implants may be used to correct
the problem.
 Dental Surgery -- In the case where a large labial
frenum is the cause of your diastema, dental
surgery may be needed prior to orthodontic
treatment. Your dentist or orthodontist may
perform a frenectomy, which removes or loosens
the tissue and prepares the space for diastema
closure.
After Treatment

If you wear braces to treat your diastema, you

will receive a retainer after the braces are
removed. The retainer will maintain the
corrected tooth positions. Consult with your
orthodontist about time and duration of wear.
