INTRODUCTION
• Prosthodontic is the dental specialty that
deal with replacement of missing teeth.
• In this lecture:
– Why would we replace missing teeth.
– What is prosthodontic and prosthesis
– What are the different ways of replacing
missing teeth.

DENTAL PROSTHESIS
 an artificial
replacement
(prosthesis) of one
or more teeth (up
to the entire
dentition in either
arch) and
associated
dental/alveolar
structures.
PROSTHETIC DENTISTRY
 prosthodontics (1947): prosthodontics is the
dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis,
treatment planning, rehabilitation and
maintenance of the oral function, comfort,
appearance and health of patients with
clinical conditions associated with missing or
deficient teeth and/ or maxillofacial tissues
using biocompatible substitutes.

 any dental prosthesis that
replaces some or all teeth
in a partially dentate arch

REMOVABLE PARTIAL DENTURE PROSTHESIS

REMOVABLE COMPLETE DENTURES
 a removable
dental prosthesis
that replaces the
entire dentition
and associated
structures of the
maxillae or
mandible.
IMMEDIATE DENTURE
A complete denture or removable partial
denture fabricated for replacement
immediately following the removable
of natural teeth .
OVER DENTURE
A removable partial or complete denture the
covers and rests on one or more remaining
natural teeth , roots , and/or dental implants .
SINGLE COMPLETE DENTURE
A complete denture that occludes against
natural teeth , a fixed restoration , a
removable partial denture or complete
denture.
FIXED DENTAL PROSTHESIS
• any dental prosthesis that is luted,
screwed or mechanically attached or
otherwise securely retained to natural
teeth, tooth roots, and/or dental
implant abutments that furnish the
primary support for the dental
prosthesis.
DENTAL IMPLANT

A prosthetic device of
implanted into the oral
tissues within the bone
to provide retention and
support for a fixed or
removable prosthesis.
MAXILLOFACIAL PROSTHODONTICS
Restoration and/or replacement of the
craniofacial structures with prosthesis.
