Sorting Remark Cards at a Rabbit Show

There are multiple responsibilities taking place behind the scenes at rabbit shows. Each task is normally completed by
volunteers who take a few minutes to help out at the show. One of those tasks is the sorting of show remark cards.

The sorting of cards prior to a show is critical to the smooth operation of the show. If mistakes are made here they effect
writers, exhibitors, secretaries and judges. This article is to help you in sorting cards at a show.

The general idea behind the sorting is to get the cards sorted first by breed, and then sorted in the order that the breed is
shown at the judging tables. A Standard of Perfection is a resource that is often helpful while sorting cards.

One of the more common errors in sorting remark cards is mixing youth and open entries. It is recommended that youth put a
large ‘Y’ in the upper right hand corner of remark cards and open put a large ‘O’. This will assist those who sort cards should
some get accidentally placed in the wrong area. Most shows take these entries for youth and open at separate tables, but on
occassion they still get placed in the incorrect spot. Sorters should watch for this.

Most shows will use a shoe box or mail sorter for sorting remark cards by breed. These are boxes with multiple slots. The
slots will be labeled with the breed names. As entries are taken, the cards are then sorted by breed using these boxes. One
item to check prior to sorting is which box the labels refer to. Does the label refer to the box above or box below the label?

After cards are sorted into breeds, its time to sort into showroom varieties/groups and then down to the individual classes.
There are two ways to do this, and the way you do it will generally depend on space available for sorting.

There are two things you need to know about a breed before sorting the cards. Both can be found in the Standard of
Perfection. You need to know if the breed is 4-class or 6-class and what the showroom varieties/groups are.

The two options in sorting are one to break down all of the cards into showroom varieties and classes at the same time for a
breed. This may work for breeds with few varieties/groups such as holland lops which are shown in broken and solid. Since it
is a 4-class breed you would have 8 piles: Solid Sr Buck, Solid Sr Doe, Solid Jr Buck, Solid Jr Doe and then the same 4 piles
for Brokens.

This would be extremely difficult for a breed such as Mini Rex. There are 17 varieties and four developmental varieties in
Mini Rex. So there is a potential of 84 separate stacks of remark cards for mini rex.

For most breeds we will start by sorting into showroom varieties. The ARBA Standard of Perfection will list showroom
varieties/groups. Although this generally is not a difficult task, it will depend on how the exhibitors completed their remark
cards.

The line you will use for sorting from the remark card is ‘Variety’. This refers to the showroom variety. Unfortunately, many
exhibitors use registration variety or even other nomenclature that refers to neither. Take for example Jersey Woolies which
are shown 6 groups: Agouti, AOV, Broken, Self, Shaded and Tan. On the remark card an exhibitors is suppose to include only
the showroom variety, but this is often not the case. For example its not uncommon to see something like broken chestnut
agouti, which is neither the appropriate showroom or registration variety. Because it would say both broken and agouti,
sometimes these cards will get incorrectly sorted.

So separate the cards into piles representing the showroom varieties. Its best to sort alphabetically as this is how most breed
variety/groups are shown. Now sort the first variety into 4 or 6 piles depending on if it is a 4-class or 6-class rabbit (Sr. Buck,
Sr. Doe, Int. Buck, Int. Doe, Jr. Buck, Jr. Doe). You then will put a paperclip on each individual class. For example if you
sort the breed New Zealand, and the variety Black, you would clip all the black senior bucks together. Once you have each
class for the variety sorted and paper clipped, you will clip the entire variety together if a paper clip will fit.

After all the varieties have been sorted and paper clipped together, you will count the cards. The count goes on a breed count
sheet that either the superintendent or show secretary will have. The cards will then be placed in the breed folder. Be sure to
keep the varieties in the same order in which they are shown. Depending on the system in use at your show, the folder will
then be stood up in the file.

It may sound a little difficult, but once you sort cards a couple of times, it becomes much easier. There’s always a need for
