Preface

This work is based upon theory and empirical research available in the economic
literature available in the University of Sussex library, other libraries and via the
internet. Chapters One through Three summarize this material. All sources used are
listed in the attached Bibliography.

Chapters Four through Seven contain original work by the author. The data used in
these chapters are in the public domain and were obtained from a variety of institutions
including the ILO, the IMF, the OECD, UNIDO and the World Bank. A copy of the
database is available upon request from the author. The econometric software used was
EVIEWS version 3.1.
