b) INTERDISCIPLINARY TEACHING

Academic disciplines are conventionally divided into the following:

  Humanities - including language, art and cultural studies.

 Scientific disciplines - such as physics, chemistry, and biology; the social sciences are sometimes considered a third
category.

Interdisciplinary - It is defined in Merriam-Webster as simply “involving two or more academic, scientific, or artistic
disciplines.”

Interdisciplinary teaching - Interdisciplinary instruction entails the use and integration of methods and analytical frameworks
from more than one academic discipline to examine a theme, issue, question or topic. Interdisciplinary education makes use
of disciplinary approaches to examine topics, but pushes beyond by: taking insights from a variety of relevant disciplines,
synthesizing their contribution to understanding, and then integrating these ideas into a more complete, and hopefully
coherent, framework of analysis.

Interdisciplinary activities

Start your class with this minds-on exercise that provides real-world interdisciplinary problems.

To launch the exercise, you must play a news clip that discusses a local, national or international topic. Then, give students a
related question to solve either individually or in teams.

For example: the clip can be about construction of Nuclear Power plant in Bataan. Using skills and concepts from different
subjects, ask students to determine political, social, and environmental and biological factors. They can volunteer to present
their solutions, answering questions from classmates.

c) TEAM TEACHING
What is team teaching?

As the name suggests, team teaching indicates a group of educators, teaching in a team. It may be comprised of 2 to
5 teachers who will prepare individual lesson plans and teach a topic, using the same activities and resources to the same
group of students. It is also called ‘shared teaching’ or ‘co-teaching’. Team teaching is most beneficial when educators
are collaborating effectively with one another and share a common purpose.
