AE1201 Aero Engineering Thermodynamics

PART – A
1. Compare heat and work.
2. A Carnot cycle refrigerator operates in a room in which the temperature is 25°C. It is
required to transfer 100 W from the cold space being held at (-30°C). What power motor
is required?
3. Show the Brayton cycle on P - v and T -s diagrams.
4. An engine working on the Otto cycle is supplied with air at 0.1 MPa, 35°C. The
compression ratio is 10 : 1. Maximum temperature in the cycle is 3600 K.
Calculate the cycle efficiency.
5. Explain why the constant pressure lines are diverging straight lines in the saturation
region of the Mollier Chart.
6. With the help of T -s diagrams, explain the differences between shaft power cycles and
propulsion cycles.
7. What are the important desirable thermodynamic properties of a refrigerant?
8. Show the simple vapour compression refrigeration cycle, (with dry, saturated vapour
entering the compressor and no sub cooling) on T -s and P - h diagrams.
9. Plot the variation of volumetric efficiency of a reciprocating compressor with back
pressure. Explain this with the help of P - V diagram.
10. Explain the physical significance of isothermal and isentropic efficiencies of
reciprocating compressors.
11. State the Kelvin-Planck statement of the second law of thermodynamics.
12. A Carnot heat engine operates between the temperatures of 300 K and 900 K. If
the heat received from the higher temperature source is 1000 kJ, calculate the works
output.
13. Compare Otto and Diesel cycles on the basis of compression ratio and maximum
temperature in the cycle.
14. What is the physical significance of mean effective pressure?
15. Define compression ratio used in Otto cycle analysis and pressure ratio used in Brayton
cycle analysis.
16. Write the area-velocity relation for an isentropic flow in a variable area duct. What is the
effect of Mach number on area-velocity relation?
17. Distinguish between simple vapour compression and vapour absorption refrigeration
systems.
18. What are the differences between Heat pump and Refrigerator?
19. Why is clearance provided in a reciprocating compressor?
20. Explain the difference in the operation of valves of an I.C. engine' and a reciprocating
compressor.
