Mythology Tracking Sheet

OBJECTIVES: I CAN identify important characters/stories from mythology in order to better understand allusions.
I CAN compare mythologies between different cultures.
I CAN apply literary theory to help further my understanding of literature.
I CAN take effective notes and improve my recall.

Mythology Major Units of Instruction:

We will spend a decent amount of class time covering these SEVEN topics. We will focus
primarily on Greek Mythology, but will explore other mythologies as well. Our primary
source for these units will be Edith Hamilton's Mythology. Please note that this book is more
of a theory book than a novel. It is college-level reading and might require a re-read from
time to time. You are required and expected to take CORNELL NOTES throughout each of
these units. This is for a MAJOR ASSIGNMENT!
1. Creation Myths (Greeks vs. Others) --Edith Hamilton Chapter 3
2. Flood Myths (Greeks vs. Others) --Edith Hamilton Chapter 3
3. Clash of the Titans (vs. the Olympians) --Edith Hamilton Chapter 1
4. Pandora (comparison with Eve) --Edith Hamilton Chapter 3
5. Seasons (Demeter, Persephone, Hades) --Edith Hamilton Chapter 2
6. Dionysus: Theater and Jesus reference --Edith Hamilton Chapter 2
7. Hero's Journey --Edith Hamilton (Various Chapters)
Odysseus (Trojan Horse and Polyphemus) Achilles (Trojan War)
Hercules (12 Labors) Jason (The Golden Fleece and Medea)
Perseus (and Medusa) Orpheus (Journey to Underworld)
Theseus (and the Minotaur) Atalanta (Footrace / Female heroine)

Mythology Minor Unit of Instruction:

As there are hundreds of mythologies, it is not possible to fully cover them all. You
are, however, responsible for knowing more than what will be covered in the major
units of instruction. To that end, you will view a power point in class and are
responsible for adding these characters/myths to your CORNELL NOTES. Please
note that you are doing this in lieu of reading the entire Edith Hamilton book.
Other characters/myths you MUST be able to IDENTIFY…
1. Midas 10. Hermes
2. Aphrodite 11. Poseidon
3. Themis 12. Narcissus and Echo
4. Apollo 13. Prometheus
5. Artemis 14. Muses
6. Ares 15. Daedalus and Icarus
7. Eros and Psyche 16. Athena and Arachne
8. Hephaestus 17. Atlas
9. Hera 18. Sirens
*Pyramus and Thisbe (covered with A Midsummer Night's Dream)
*Trojan War (Paris & Helen) (covered with The Iliad)
