Serve as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee JEFFERSON CITY — As a three-year veteran of the Missouri Senate Appropriations Committee, Sen. Kurt Schaefer was recently appointed to serve as chairman of the panel, which is responsible for considering and reporting on all bills and matters pertaining to Missouri’s fiscal year budget.
“In my role as vice-chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee in
2010, my experience will help guide me in this new role as committee chair,” said Sen. Schaefer. “I look forward to working with the governor, as well as my colleagues in the House and Senate, to find fiscally responsible solutions during this difficult budget year.”
Leaders in the Missouri Senate have already listed their budget
priorities for this legislative session, including protecting taxpayers in Missouri’s current economy. In addition, the Senate vows to not implement new taxes; do more with less by going after waste, fraud and abuse while better managing state services by making every dollar count; saying “no” to earmarks and protecting the few discretionary dollars available to help fill budget gaps caused by the federal economic recession; and maintaining the state’s strong budget management to-date by implementing a smaller budget gap in Missouri compared to other states in the country.
“Work is already underway to protect taxpayers in this tough
economy,” said Sen. Schaefer. “We have to think outside the box in order to tackle the most challenging budget year on record due to monumental shortfalls in our state. By working together in the best interest of Missourians, I am confident that those working our state’s budget will find common-sense solutions that will benefit the hard working taxpayers in Missouri.”
Senate President Pro Tem Robert N. Mayer, R-Dexter, appointed
Sen. Schaefer to serve as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The pro tem will name the other 10 members to the committee at a later date.
