At the beginning of September, Tri-Met raised the cash youth fare from 50 cents for all zones to 85 cents for
one zone. The raise affects all youth who ride the bus, especially the 40 percent of Portland high school students
who ride everyday to and from school, according to Phil Colombo.

Colombo, Public Information Officer at Tri-Met, explains the reason for the raise: “One reason is because, at 50
cents per ride, youth riders were paying an average of half of what the adult riders were paying. And the adults,
who pay between 75 cents and $1.25 per ride, depending on the zones, pay for only 25 percent of what it actu-
ally cost us to transport them. So, the youth were paying only 12.5 percent of the cost.”

Another reason for the raise is that “Tri-Met offers many discounts in many different fashions, like senior and
honored citizens. It is financially impossible to give so many discounts,” Colombo explained.

Yet a discount is still available to youth—through the use of the youth pass.

“There are ways for youth who are genius enough to still get around for 50 cents a ride. This is accomplished by
using the youth pass which at $20 a month, is the best way for a youth to use the bus, providing they ride twice
on weekdays,” Colombo said. “For example, this is best for the students who depend on the bus to get to and
from school.

“Not only do the bus passes provide a less expensive way for youth to travel, but if a pass is shown in some
stores, discounts are available on some items,” Colombo said.

Youth passes are available at the bookkeeper’s window from Sept. 1-5 of each month.
