ANSWER QUESTION 1 AND FOUR OTHERS

1. Find the forces in the members of the truss shown below.

2. Locate the centroid of the piece of metal shown below.

3. Find the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the
concurrent forces of 8N, 12N, 15N, and 20N making angles of 30o,
70o, 120o and 155o respectively with a fixed line. (Use graphical
method).

4. A body resting on a rough horizontal plane required a pull of

18N inclined at 45 o to the plane just to move it. It was found that a
push of 22N inclined at 45 o to the plane just moved the body.
Determine the weight of the body and coefficient of friction.

5. A wheel has five equally spaced radial spokes all in tension. If

the tensions of three consecutive spokes are 700N, 900N and 800N
respectively, find tensions in the other two spokes.

6. State Lami’s theorem. Differentiate between centroid and centre

of gravity.
A man and a boy carry a weight of 250N between them by
means of a uniform pole 1.7m long and weighing 90N. Where will
the weight be placed so that the man may bear twice as much of
the weight as that of the boy?

7. State the advantages and disadvantages of friction.

State the laws of friction.
