Manuel F. Silva

DARTMOUTH -- Private funeral services were held yesterday for Manuel F. Silva, 88,
of South Dartmouth, who died at home, Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998, after a long illness. He
was the husband of Silvina (Borges) Silva and son of the late John and Charlotte
(Nunes) Silva.
Born in New Bedford, he lived there until moving to Dartmouth 27 years ago.
Mr. Silva was a World War II Army veteran with the 764th Railway Operating
Battalion, serving in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He attained the
rank of private first class, and was awarded the Purple Heart, the Good Conduct Medal,
the World War II Victory Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater
Campaign Ribbon.
After his tour of duty with the service, he was employed by the former Paxson Mill and
Quinsett Mill as an operator in the card room. He also worked for James Perry
Landscaping. He worked in the construction field, mainly in the Boston area.
Mr. and Mrs. Silva would have been married 63 years on Sept. 7, 1998.
He was an avid sports fan, especially of wrestling and the Boston Red Sox. He was a
member of the Dartmouth Senior Center.
In his earlier years, he was known to frequent the former Red Wing Athletic Club on
Rockdale Avenue, New Bedford.
Survivors include his widow; a daughter, "Laurie" O'Rourke Accousti of Florida; three
sons, Richard M. Silva of Florida, Ronald J. Silva of Dartmouth and Robert E. Silva of
California; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by the Aubertine Funeral Home, 129 Allen St., New Bedford.
