(Square Lashing)
Three or four turns should be enough.
Objective
Understand how and when to use square lashing

Fact Finding
Square Lashing
Square lashing is used to bind two poles together. It
is a stronger lashing than diagonal lashing, so it is
often used to bind poles that bear a heavier load.
Square lashing is most effective when the poles make
a right angle (for angles between 45 and 90 degrees, Step 3. Start the frappings. Once you have enough
use diagonal lashing). wrappings. Guid the rope horizontally between the
two poles. This is called a frapping.
Step 1. Start with a clove hitch. Place the two poles
so they make a right angle. Tie the clove hitch on the
vertical pole and pull the free end (the longer end) of
the rope over the horizontal pole to make your first
wrapping. Tuck the loose end of the hitch under the
wrapping to keep the lashing neat and tangle free.

Proceed until you have 3-4 frappings.

Step 2. Start the wrapping. Weave the rope

underneath the vertical pole and over the horizontal
pole. Make sure to pull the rope tight after each turn,
and keep the rope tight. A strong lashing relies on
the tension in the rope. Continue until there is 3-4
turns on each pole.

Step 4. End the Lashing with another clove hitch.
