Smoky skies
Environment Canada has issued a
special air quality statement for our area.
Smoke will continue to transport over
the southern half of the province, howev-
er air quality is expected to begin to im-
prove for all regions over the weekend.
The firesmoke.ca forecast shows the
smoke from the US fires reaching as far
north as Yellowknife, and out across the
Atlantic, past Newfoundland.
Kingsvale transmis-
sion line energized
The Kingsvale electricity transmis-
sion line, which runs from Aspen Grove
to Kingsvale, was successfully complet-
ed & energized late last month. With this
milestone, Valard Construction and the
Lower Nicola Indian Band Devt Corp.
will begin operating & maintaining it,
as partners. The 138-kV transmission
line connects to BC Hydro’s distribution
line to provide additional power to Trans
Mountain’s existing Kingsvale pump
station, as well as to a new Kingsvale
pump station, as part of the Trans Moun-
tain Expansion Project.
This is the first electricity transmis-
sion line to be majority-owned, operated,
maintained and financed by an Indige-
nous group in Canada.
BC firefighters
head to Oregon
More than 200 BC firefighters and re-
lated personnel are heading to the US to
help battle extreme fire activity in Ore-
gon. The firefighters are being deployed
to Redmond, Ore. and will be sent on as
needed to assist with the dire wildfire sit-
uation. BC is also in contact with Oregon
& Washington about possibly an addi-
tional 200 personnel in the coming days
& weeks.
Given the challenges posed by the
COVID-19 pandemic in the province
and US, BC Wildfire Service personnel
will remain within their own “bubble”
and conduct their firefighting operations
separately from American firefighters, as
co-ordinated by relevant authorities.
All associated costs will be covered
by the jurisdiction that requested the re-
sources, including BC Wildfire Service
staff quarantine time upon their return
to Canada. Sufficient personnel and
resources remain in the province to re-
spond appropriately to any fire activity
in British Columbia, considering the cur-
rent and forecasted fire situation.
