Conference and Consortium

Definition :

A group of shipping companies (carriers) who have voluntary


come together for the purpose of limiting and regulating
competition among themselves.

Large group : Conference


Small group : Consortium

Two types
1. Open type
2. Closed type
Characteristics of conference / consortium

1. Conferences operate on written agreements.


2. Members expected to follow rules and regulations.
Failure to comply will lead to penalties.
3. Prices charged are identical for same volume, weight
and distance.
4. All members are listed in tariff schedule.
5. Decision making by voting.
