The Writer’s Workshop

Sharing Time

(Teacher & Student Responses)

1. Choose students who will be sharing their writing this session. Write
their names on the board.

2. Watch and listen as the young author reads his/ her writing. Make sure
that the author holds the paper so that every one can see it.

3. Tell what is terrific!

4. Invite each group member to tell what he or she thinks is terrific about
the piece. Allow the author to choose three friends to comment on their
writing. The teacher or the student can write down the comments.

5. Ask the group if they have any questions for the writer, or if anything
needs to be added or lined out. Record their comments.

6. Ask your writer where the suggested details or changes can be made.
Show the writer if necessary.

7. Summarise suggestions and compliments. Give the writer the comment


sheets that you created during the conference.

8. Summarise the things that the young author did well.

9. Applaud your young author!

10. Always stay positive and smile!
