Tips on Letter Writing

1. Format:

• Address and date at top right

• Addressor below on left

• Use heading and reference

• Dear Mr......Yours sincerely

• Dear Sirs.....Yours faithfully

2. Need an introduction eg refer to letter/ phone call

3. Do not use abbreviations eg I’ll, can’t, won’t

4. Never start with “I am writing to you..” that’s self evident!

5. Never start a sentence with And, because, therefore

6. Check your spellings and grammar

7. Use plain English and avoid legal terminology. If need to use any
ensure that you give a clear explanation of its meaning

8. Use short sentences, paragraphs and, where appropriate,


subheadings

9. Do not refer to statutes or cases in letters to clients

10. Avoid any emotion such as “I feel, I believe

11. Conclude with something along the lines of “If you require any
further information please do not hesitate to contact me.”
