JOB STRESS
• It is a relatively new phenomenon in modern
lifestyle
• A harmful physical and emotional response
resulted from disqualification of:
 capabilities
 resources
 workers’ needs e.g: appreciations and
satisfaction
Definition of stress
• Response to certain circumstances (e.g:
pressure) or a physical, chemical, or
emotional factor that causes a bodily, or
mental tension and maybe a factor in disease
causation.
• Stress : is the condition
• Stressor : the stimulus that cause to stress

• A survey by Gallup revealed: 90% employees
were at LEAST satisfied with their jobs
• A study by SHRM found: 40% employees were
VERY satisfied with their jobs

Management) are institutions that conduct studies
on job satisfaction of employees
Organizational commitment
• It is the emotional attachment people have
toward company
• There is a high degree overlap between job
satisfaction and organizational commitment
• In other words, THINGS THAT MAKE US
HAPPY WITH OUR JOB OFTEN MAKE US
MORE COMMITTED TO THE COMPANY

Job characteristics
• Ability to use a variety of skills
• Having autonomy at work
• Receive feedback on the job (e.g: appraisal
and appreciation)
• The jobs help employees improve and build
their skills
Organizational justice
• Fair company policies and procedures (e.g: equal
chances for career advancement and promotions)
• Fair and kind treatment from supervisors
• Fairness of their pay and other rewards received
from the company
* At the root of organizational justice is TRUST;
something that is easier to break than to repair
once broken
Psychological contract
• It is the unspoken, informal understanding that
an employee will contribute certain things to
the organization (e.g: work ability and a
willing attitude) and will receive certain things
in return (e.g: reasonable pay and benefits)
• Under psychological contract, employee may
believe that they will be given bonus, periodic
raises and promotions and will be not laid off.
Relationships at work
• Socially accepted in the group work
• Well cooperated with other colleagues
• Good communication with managers
• Considerate and caring manager
• Building a trust-based relationship with
managers
Level of stress
• Low level of stress in terms of:
 environment – conducive, cool, adequate
ventilation of work space
 interpersonal – no organizational politics,
good bonding with co-workers
 organizational – autonomy in completing
tasks, warranty on security of job
