This document contains instructions for an aeronautical engineering design study assignment. Students are asked to: 1) Perform a longitudinal stability analysis and calculate static margin for different center of gravity conditions. 2) Revise the design if stability is deficient and show the work. 3) Write a report summarizing the analysis, references, and assumptions. The assignment is due on January 7th 2010.

1. Perform a longitudinal stability analysis for your aircraft. Calculate the
static magrin for the most forward and rearward CG conditions (with full fuel load and empty fuel tanks). Make sure the static margin is within acceptable limits. For the downwash derivative, use the method outlined in Appendix B.5 in “Dynamics of Flight”, B. Etkin and L.D. Reid. 2. If you find that your aircraft is deficient in any one of these conditions, revise your design and show the steps of your work. 3. Write a report. Give references for your analysis. Give reasons for the assumptions and choices that you will make.
