ASSIGNMENT NO. 3
FALL SEMESTER 2010

SUBMIT THIS ASSIGNMENT BY JANUARY 03, 2011.

Notes: All symbols have their usual meanings unless otherwise stated. Assume any missing data. Draw
neat sketches where necessary.
Question No. 1:
i. 1 gpm (imp.) = ________________ cfs
ii. 1 gpm (US) = _________________ cfs
iii. 1 l/s = _______________________ cfs
iv. 1 cumec = ____________________ cfs
v. 1 Ac-ft = _____________________ m3/s = ___________________ cfs-day
vi. 1½" of rain per day over 0.8 mi2 = __________________ cfs
vii. 1 sfd = ____________________ m3
viii. 1 ppm = ____________________gm/l = ___________________ gm/ cm3
Question No. 2: Define the following terms:
a) A rainfall event or storm b) Small catchments c) Midsize catchments d) Large catchments
e) Time of concentration f) Lag time g) Curve number
Question No. 3: What are water-holding elements in the hydrological cycle?
Question No. 4:
During a given year, the following hydrologic data were measured for a certain 60-mi2 watershed:
Total precipitation = 35 in.
Estimated losses due to evaporation, evapotranspiration, and infiltration = 28 in.
Calculate the mean annual runoff (in cfs).
Question No. 5:
A certain catchment experiences 12.7 cm of total rainfall. The catchment is covered by pasture with
medium grazing, and 32 percent of B soils and 68 percent of C soils. Following the SCS methodology,
determine the direct runoff for the rainfall event.
Question No. 6:
The bottom of a certain 100-km reach of a river can be described by the following longitudinal profile:
y = 100eି଴.଴଴଴଴ଵ୶
where y = elevation with reference to an arbitrary datum in meters; and x = horizontal distance measured
from upstream end of reach in meters. Calculate the slope of the river.
Question No. 7:

Given the following intensity-duration data, find the a and m constants for the equation ݅ = ೘

Intensity (mm/h) 50 30
Duration (h) 0.5 1.0
Question No. 8:
The precipitation gage for station X was inoperative during part of the month of January. During that same
period, the precipitation depths measured at three index stations A, B, and C were 25, 28, and 27 mm,
respectively. Estimate the missing precipitation data X, given the following average annual precipitation at
X, A, B, and C: 285, 250, 225, as 275 mm, respectively.

Quadrant Precipitation (mm) Distance (km)
I 25 8.5
II 28 6.2
III 27 3.7
IV 30 15.0
Estimate the missing precipitation data at station Y.
