1. 20 grains/in are observed at a magnification of 400. (i) Calculate the ASTM grain size
number (n) and (ii) calculate the number of grains/in2 on the specimen (i.e., with no
magnification)----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [2]

2. Suppose one Schottky defect is present in every tenth unit cell of UC. UC has the sodium
chloride crystal structure with a lattice parameter of 0.396nm. Calculate (i) the number of
anion vacancies per cc and (ii) the density (g/cc) of the ceramic (with those Schottky
defects) given that the atomic masses of U and C are 238.03g/mol and 16g/mol respectively. -- [3]
