ANCHORED PILE JETTY DESIGN

Input required data

Length of the ship 150 ft = 45.73 m
Dead Load of the ship ( unloaded ) 8000 tons = 8000000 kg
Cargo Load of the ship 12000 tons = 12000000 kg
Total load of the ship = 20000000 kg

Depth from low tide to ship bottom = 5.3 m

Height required above high tide = 2.5 m
Difference between low and high tide = 1m

Total depth of sheet pile above dredge line ( H )= 8.8 m

Input the desired depth ( H ) for the sheet pile = 9m

NOTE : The depth of embedment for sheet pile is

* 0.90H to H for cantilevered sheet pile
* 0.40H to 0.50 H for embedded sheet pile with anchor

Input the approx.initial depth of embedment ( D )= 5m

Minimum shock load equivalent to a thrust = 1% of the

maximum weight of vessel to be berthed = 200000 kg = 1960 KN

Then , calculate shock load (Fs) to produce permissible deflection (5") on

the fender system and a glancing blow equal to 1/10 of the kinetic energy
produced by the berthing ship's approach velocity ( 1 mph )

Input the allowable ( standard ) deflection (d) = 5 in

= 0.13 m

Input the ship's allowable approach velocity = 1 mph

= 0.45 m/s

Calculating shock load by work - energy method

Fs x d = 1/10 ( 1/2 * ( weight * approach velocity ) )

Fs = 1573.296 KN
min Fs = 1960.000 KN

Input higher value of shock load Fs for design = 1960 KN

Bending moment ( sheet pile ) due to Fs = 17640 KN-m

Soil Density = 18 KN/m

Angle of Friction = 30 deg
Active Pressure coefficient (ka) = 0.33
Passive Pressure coefficient (kp) = 3

a =kaH / ( kp-ka) = 10.12

P1 = wkpH (H+a)/2 = 4647.43

acting at y = ( 2a + H ) / 3 from O = 9.75
