SEMINAR TOPIC:
METHODS OF CURING
WHAT IS CURING—
THE PROCESS IN WHICH FRESHLY CAST
CONCRETE IS KEPT IN SUFFICIENTLY WET OR
HUMID CONDITION SO THAT THE HYDRATION
REACTION IS ACHIEVED COMPLETELY
WHY NECESSARY OF
CURING OF CONCRETE—
1. CURING IS NECESSARY FOR CONTINUATION OF
HYDRATION REACTION WHICH GIVE CONCRETE ITS
STRENGTH.

2.TO DISSIPATE THE HEAT OF HYDRATION

3.CONCRETE TILL FULL STRENGTH IS ACHIEVED

DIFFERENT
METHODS OF
CURING - -
METHODS OF CURING

1.SPRAING WATER
2.STEAM CURING
3.WET GUNNY BAGS
4.PONDING METHOD
SPRAING WATER
1.SprayinG
WateR--
This is by far the simplest method. In this
method, after removal of the shuttering or
the formwork, water is sprayed on the
concrete

This method is suitable for small works. It

requires great care in supervision, and as
soon as the concrete gets dry, water has to be
sprayed anew.
2.Steam Curing--
This type of curing is used for pre-cast concrete
products manufactured in factory.
Due to steam, the ingradients are heated uniformly
and the strength is gained at a very fast rate.
Even in the small gaps of stacked precast
products, steam can penetrate and cure all the pieces
evenly from all sides.
Hence this method is beneficial. There are two types
of steam curing.:
curing
a .low pressure steam

curing--
B.High pressure steam

A. Low curi n g - -

In this method, the stream curing is done at

atmospheric pressure and about 70% of the 28-
days strength can be obtained in 16 to 24 hours.
A typical low pressure cycle is givan below:
•Pre steaming period 3 hours.
•Temperature rise period 4 hours period of
maximum temperature 4 hours cooling off period 5
hours.

p re
The advantages are:
1. High early strength-more than 28
days strength is achieved within 24
hours.
2. Durability-High pressure steam
curing gives concrete of very high
3. Curing by Wet
Gunny Bags--
This method is very useful for vertical
surfaces of concrete like sides of columns.
These retain moisture for a long time.
this method is very economical.
PONDING METHOD
4. Ponding
method--
This method is especially suitable for a
large slab or for road pavements.
Here on top of the slab, with clayey
soil, small bunds are prepared, and in the
resulting grid of ponds, water is stored upto a
depth of 50 mm,for 28 days.
The water used should be of good ,portable
quality.
Thus depending on the requirement,a
suitable method for curing should be
adopted.
CONCLUSION

FROM THIS PROJECT I CONCLUDE THAT CURING

OF CONCRETE PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN
STRENGTH GAINING OF CONCRETE
