INTRODUCTION
 Definitions : According to the initial 1955 report
about the epidemiology of the disease, the term
'chikungunya' is derived from the Makonde root verb
kungunyala, meaning to dry up or become contorted

SIGNS AND
SYMPTOMS
 ~ Chikungunya is characterized by an abrupt onset
of fever frequently accompanied by joint pain
 ~ The incubation period of Chikungunya disease

is from two to four days


 ~ fever up to 40 °C

 ~ muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue


TRANSMISSION
 The virus is transmitted from human to human by the
bites.
 Infected by female mosquitoes

 Most commonly, the mosquitoes involved are Aedes


aegypti and Aedes albopictus
 These mosquitoes can be found biting throughout
daylight hours, although there may be peaks of activity
in the early morning and late afternoon
 After the bite of an infected mosquito, onset of illness
occurs usually between four and eight days but can range
from two to 12 days
PREVENTION
 The most effective means of prevention are protection against
contact with the disease-carrying mosquitoes and mosquito control
 ~ insect repellents with substance like DEET

(N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide)
 ~ Wearing bite-proof long sleeves and trousers

 ~ Clean clogged roof gutters and drain flat roofs

Dispose of unwanted tin cans and tires


 ~ Securing screens on windows and doors

 ~ Change water in birdbaths, fountains, and troughs

twice a week
TREATMENT
 There are no specific drugs to cure the disease.
Treatment is directed primarily at relieving the
symptoms, including the joint pain. There is no
commercial chikungunya vaccine.
