Mexico City, which is one of the largest cities in the world, was a very
beautiful place with its breath-taking views and amazing structures. However,
this city is also very vulnerable to earthquakes.

Since Mexico was built on a seemingly dry lake bed, this made the city’s soil
unstable. Since the colonial times, the surface lake had been known to have
disappeared due to water saturation. This made the Mexico’s land easy to
shake during earthquakes. This beautiful city got destroyed when a strong
earthquake happened on September 19, 1985. About 10,000 persons died and
hundreds of buildings also collapsed. Thousands more got damaged. The damages
left the people with problems like lack of potable water, loss of
electricity, loss of telephone service. Classes in schools, hospital
services, and peoples’ work also got interrupted.

As a result of this event, Mexico now takes into consideration the fact
!
that its soil is not stable. The city made a strict earthquake
building code to prevent the same problems from happening in the
future. An alert system was also prepared to send electronic early
warning messages and a Civil Protection Committee was created to help
during major disasters. The people also helped each other in
rebuilding their city into a beautiful place once again. Now, Mexico
City is more beautiful than ever. It’s a very nice and interesting
place to live in and visit to.

Population And Resources In

Mexico City
Mexico City was helped established in 1519 by the Spaniards. It is centrally located in North
America. People came to Mexico City in the past to trade silver, lead, copper, zinc, & oil. Mexico
City exported all of these products to the countries, states, & continents that needed it and Mexico
City traded its natural resources to get other things that it needed.
! Today, people come to Mexico City because there are many job opportunities like banking,
computer programming, tourism, catering etc. There is good education, good food, and it’s a peaceful
place for retirement. Also, you can visit this place with your family to have a great time. Some people
move to Mexico City for both reasons.
! Currently in Mexico City, there are 8,836,045 people. Approximately one- third of Mexican
children are children under 15. In Mexico City, there are Indians, Spanish, French, and African. Half
of this population is Roman Catholic, quarters are Jewish, and three- fifths are Buddhist. Mexico has
several major industries dealing with silver, cotton, coffee, petroleum, mineral refines, and fuel.
! Mexico is a big city with a big population. People enjoy living in this city because of its rich
culture, abundant economic resources, and variety of interesting things that one can do.

My Visit to Mexico City
My first visit to Mexico City was
truly memorable. Last March, my
family and I decided to go there for a
three-day vacation. I didn’t want to
go at first because I thought it was
going to be very boring. However, at
the hotel, I overheard a girl saying
that Mexico City is one of the cities
with the largest and most modern
shopping malls in Latin America. I
couldn’t contain my excitement after
hearing that. I asked my mom to
accompany me to El Palacio de
Hierro, one of the largest shopping
malls in Mexico City. The place was
amazingly huge with its five-story
building made of iron and steel. I got
home tired but happy with all my
purchases.

Then & Now

In the past, Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán stood on an island in Lake Texcoco, which is now the center of
Mexico City. During this time, people made some measures to protect the city and to expand it by draining
Lake Texcoco and the other lakes. However, draining the lakes and the artisan wells made the water table so
low that the surface crust of the land had a hard time supporting the city’s heavier buildings. This made the
land sink to about 4 to 12 inches a year. Some of the city’s finer buildings like the old cathedral, which was
built in 1553, got damaged. During the colonial times, Mexico City’s landscape was mainly used for mining
activities. In the 1930’s, the construction industry grew because of the presence of sandbanks in the area.
Meanwhile, in 1970’s , the people made an urban development plan for the area. An industrial zone was
made to provide jobs to the locals and to develop import substitution. However, this plan did not consider
how putting residential areas would affect the land’s capacity to carry water or drainage out of the area. In
the 1980’s, many of the landfills were closed so that buildings could be constructed. In 1982, Mexico
changed from industrial to residential when Universidad Iberoamericana built on the land donated by the
Santa Fe unity government. In the 1990’s, shopping malls and toll highways were built. This made Mexico
City, which includes the capital district and almost 50 smaller cities very populated with people. Slums have
grown in numbers because more people wanted to move in to the city to find jobs. Although Mexico City is
presently the largest in the world, it suffers from overcrowding since it has become the center of commercial,
industrial, financial, political, and cultural center of the nation.

Portugal, France, the British (UK), and The Dutch
used Dubai as a trading route to the East and
India. However some people used to see Dubai as a
diminutive fishing town and pearling center
because it was located near the sea. All of that
changed with the unexpected discovery of gigantic
amount of oil in Dubai in 1966. Dubai was soon
booming with money when the oil export began in
1969. They worked with many oil industries in
order to get all the potential benefits from their oil
discovery. As a result, the money and the oil
boosted the economy and transformed Dubai from
an old fishing village to one of the world’s most
futuristic city. Today, Dubai has become one of the
most develop city in the world. In fact the city of
Dubai is now rapidly growing to be the world’s
most excellent tourism and economic core. Other
than that the money they received from the oil
helped them become one of the wealthiest cities
and leaders in the U.A.E. All of this wouldn’t have

POPULATION & RESOURCES

The first record of the city of Dubai’s existence was in 1095, on the south of the Persian Gulf. Many mer-
chants would settle in Dubai, as it was long a great trading route. But some people in the past would go to
Dubai as it had many water related activities such as fishing, pearling, offshore trading and more. Though
there were many opportunities or things to do in the past, Dubai only attracted a population of 10,000 peo-
ple. Things have changed since then. Dubai is no longer the old fishing city it used to be. In fact, today Dubai
is considered to be one of the most innovative cities in the world. Millions of people/expats migrate to Dubai
as it has tons of opportunities and possibilities. Many of which are job opportunities (long and short term),
free tertiary education, a multi-cultural city, and it is almost crime free. The population has risen greatly be-
cause of this. As of 2008 the population of Dubai was 3,410,737 people, which includes many different nation-
alities, such as Emirati, Arabian, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Sri Lankan, Europeans, and Ameri-
cans. Not only did Dubai caught the eyes of millions of people, Dubai also attracted many world known
companies like Dubai Petroleum Company, Al Futtaim corp., and the Galadari corp. With so many people
and companies coming to this city, “paradise of endless opportunities” is the only statement that can describe
Dubai in this situation.

LANDSCAPE CHANGES
Do you know that the city of Dubai was almost nothing ten years ago?
In fact, Dubai was just a hopeless deprived desert near the sea. The
landscape was pretty barren to tell you the truth. There was nothing
spectacular to see, just plain old sand and with tons of rocks scattered
around.

Today, Dubai is no longer what it was before since it found oil as a

huge part of its economy and growth. By selling their oil to other
countries, Dubai has been receiving a lot of funds to construct various
buildings and other development facilities on their land. Now there
are many skyscrapers as tall as mountains, shopping centers, roads
stretching as far as the eye can see, and buildings clustered all over
the landscape. This new transformed landscape has attracted many of
the world’s people causing an economical boost and many financial
benefits for Dubai. This city is like a graceful butterfly who just
bloomed out from its cocoon.

Unbelievable! Just visiting Dubai was just simply mind-blowing. It was like stepping

A Story From A Visitor
Let me tell you I couldn’t get enough of it. Staying at the hotel, Burj Al Arab was just
splendid. Although it was a bit pricy, they treated me with first class hospitality and
Zugo excellent cuisine. After that I went to this unimaginable indoor ski resort called Ski
Dubai. At first when I saw this place I was so flabbergasted that I said “ Oh my gosh!
There is a ski resort in Dubai; where everyday it is hot and sunny all the time? That is so
totally amazing!” So I rushed in, and found my self in this place with snow everywhere.
It looked so realistic that I thought I was in the North Pole or something. Though the
hotel and the ski resort were awesome, the thing about Dubai that really caught my
attention was how this city is very cosmopolitan. Most people living here were mostly
from a different country, I could sense how Dubai is very international. Also most of the
foods here are based on Western, Asian, or Arabian food. I got to taste the best of 3
worlds, that my stomach was soon hungry for more. However my hunger for these foods were beaten out by my cravings
for shopping. Buying and shopping is essential when visiting this city. Why do you think it’s called “Do Buy!” I bought
myself some nifty devices and souvenirs for my friends and family at home. I can almost find everything in Dubai. I
shopped for hours till I was too tired to continue. My time in Dubai is done. I wish I could stay longer but I can’t. Let me
tell you, Dubai is like mega mall that will bring it’s customers endless joy.

“Dubai oh Dubai, you amaze Why oh why, do you mesmerize

me without saying goodbye. me to buy!”

Dubai is a bucket full of joy that will never cease to astound you. This city has risen
from the dark and into the limelight. In fact Dubai was just a hopeless deprived desert
near the sea a hundred years ago. The landscape was pretty barren to tell you the
truth. All of that changed with the unexpected discovery of gigantic amount of oil in
Dubai in 1966. People were so amazed on how fast Dubai has grown ever since then.
There is no limit to Dubai’s growth. You can now find sky scrapers as tall as
mountains, road stretching as far as the eye can see, and buildings clustered all over
the land in Dubai. Not only did the landscape change but also the population has
been flowing with tons of visitors. As of 2008 the population of Dubai was 3,410,737
people, which includes many different nationalities and cultures. Some of these
nationalities are Emirate, Arabian, Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Sri
Lankan, Europeans, and Americans. This city can be described as cosmopolitan,
considering this city is like a garden flourishing with success. There is so much things
to explore in Dubai, most of which are from it fascinating past to its’ unbelievable
current figure, and the entertaining possibilities that are found there.

Changes to the Landscape

Did you know that people have changed the

land of Bent Street, Sydney through the
process of building projects? Between 1880
and 2003 people have changed the
landscape of Bent Street. They built the
market buildings, because they wanted to
have more profit and to make people more
comfortable. In the past, Bent Street was
lit with gas. As you can see the buildings in
the picture at the right of Bent Street in
1880 were old
and now have a look at your left in
2003, there are new and tall buildings.
The three storied building verandas, on
the corner of O’Connell Street, was the
Australian Club. Bent Street is very
different now. It is a narrow wind
tunnel, dominated by high rise office
towers. The Cheswick Hotel has been
shifted from Bent Street to Bligh
Street and, is now on the corner of
Bligh. Can you believe how many
changes there are in these two
pictures? Bent Street is very complex
and very significant street now.

How people have changed the landscape

The landscape of London has dramatically changed compared from how it looked a century ago.
Before London was definitely not as wealthy compared to now. This picture shows how London
contained many markets and cheap selling stalls. These many stalls were convenient to people with
not a lot of money. London was a humid and wet city, and often quite cold. There were huge class
differences for the people living in London. It was not exactly the matter of how you lived it was
more about living its self. The land was quite flat, with no mountains at all. Not many people
realized the amount of money you could make with all the land.

London Before

Today London has a much larger population in both migrates and tourists. There are now proper
shops and modern buildings. London now has a lot of stone grounds. The reason people changed
the landscape was because more people would equal more money causing a higher, stronger and
better economy. Now people take advantage of London’s flat landscape and build. They build all
kind of office buildings. London now is known to be quite an up market city and holds a very
strong and wealthy rating to visitors and people that live there.

Impact of the Past on the Present

Cairo wasn’t a city before in the past but in that region it was still peaceful. Egyptians farmed, made
pottery and travelled through the Nile. They made amazing structures due to their intelligence and
their cleverness.

But a dramatic change stroke upon them as the Muslim Arabs moving West across the North of
Africa invaded and conquered Egypt in AD 639.

So, there were two different types of effects; both positive and a negative. The positive one has lead
Cairo to be the capital of Egypt and also guided them to adopt the Arabic Script. However, more
Coptic Christians had to convert their religion to Islam because of the heavy taxes due to them.
Children from marriages between mixed religion would always end up being an Islam.

But in conclusion Cairo has grown to be the largest Muslim city and there are still many traces of
traditions in the city like the Aytmishi Mosque, Mosque of Bergwan, Mosque of Mohamid Ali and
the Mosque of Malika Safiya.

Population and Resources

The present day Cairo used to be called al-Fustat, founded in AD 641 by an Arabic commander
named Amr ibn al. It was located on the East side of the Nile River. These settlements began as the
Nile provided fresh water suitable for the people and rich silt stupendous for growing crops.

Today, people immigrate to Cairo because of the many things the

city offers. But there is one that is really important and that is jobs.
You can come to Cairo and get so many opportunities all related
to jobs. So right now in Cairo, 53% do services like teachers,
doctors and government officers. 15% do agriculture and 32% of
the people work in industries. Continuing on with this, the major
industries in Cairo have to do with Egyptian cotton because it is
quite famous there. Cairo also has a lot of natural resources; The Suez Canal
petroleum being concentrated in the Suez Canal and natural gas
being intense all throughout Egypt.

Currently, and by the last census in 2004, there are about 14.5 million people living in Cairo. So in
conclusion, Cairo is now becoming a multi-national city with Ethnic Mixes with Greeks, Romans and
Turks. There is now French and English spoken there instead of only Arabic their national language.

With so many beautiful sights too see and fun things to do, life in Kuala

means “muddy confluence” it is far from muddy. People started changing the

glamour, it still manages to stay very down to earth with a lot of cultural and
traditional places like China Town and Little India. Kuala Lumpur is definitely

My Trip to KL...
When I first went to Kuala Lumpur, I was
overwhelmed with all the buildings and
skyscrapers towering over me. There was so many
sights too see and fun things to do but, what I really SURIIA
wanted to do was shop! I started in Suria KLCC KLCC
where I went to stores like Marks & Spencer,
Tiffany & Co., DKNY, Polo and a lot more. The I
went to Mid Valley Megamall where they were
selling things like clothes, electronics, computers,
gifts, souvenirs, groceries, appliances and so much
other stuff. But the real adventure started when I MID VALLEY
went to Jalan Bukit Bintang! It was amazing; I just MEGA MALL
kept buying and buying until I couldn’t stand
anymore! So I went back to my hotel room in the
Cititel Mid Valley Hotel, put on my PJs, climb into
bed, and fell asleep. The next morning I woke with a
huge grin on my face, ready to do actual sight
seeing. The first place I went to was the Petronas
Towers; the view from the top was breathtaking!
Then I went to Batu Caves where I had so much fun
taking pictures of the cave walls. I ended my day in
the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park where I saw and CITITEL MID
learned about lots of different kinds of birds. My VALLEY
trip to Kuala Lumpur was definitely one I will
always remember.

Jalan Bukit Bintang - Then & Now

In the 1950s, Jalan Bukit Bintang was just a
peaceful little road with tall trees and small bushes
lining the side walk, small houses on each side, and no
traffic congestion. But over time, people started
changing the landscape by building shopping malls, tall
buildings, upscale cafes, restaurants, clubs and they
just kept going from there. Over the last five years, this
place has been transformed to be one of the busiest
shopping areas in the whole of KL. Now, Jalan Bukit
Bintang is a major road in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and
a popular tourist destination of the city.

Back then - when it was still called the Federation of Malaysia - the society was split into two parts; bumiputras –
Malaysians who belong to the ethnic groups who were there before the arrivals of the Indian, Chinese, or European
immigrants – who got special privileges and nonbumiputras, who didn’t. In the 1960s conflicts started forming between
the two groups over the system of privileges. Singapore’s leader, Lee Kuan wanted what he called a “Malaysian Malaysia”
where all citizens had equal rights. But the Malays were scared that most of the economic power would stay in the hands
of the Chinese and because of this, Singapore withdrew from the federation on August 9, 1965 and became an independent
nation. By 1969 a lot of the nonbumiputras hated the privilege system and most of that hate was pointed towards their
political leaders, the Alliance Party. In the elections for the law making body which was held on May 10, 1969, the Alliance
Party lost many seats. Large crowds of Chinese marched in the streets of Kuala Lumpur in celebration of their electoral
victory holding banners and signs with slogans like, "Kuala Lumpur sekarang China punya" (Kuala Lumpur now belongs to
the Chinese), "Orang Melayu balik kampong" (Malays go back to the villages), "Melayu sekarang tidak ada kuasa
lagi" (Malays now no longer have power), and "Semua Melayu kasi habis" (Finish off all the Malays). Fighting broke out
between the Chinese, the Indians, and the Malays in the streets of KL. According to police figures, 196 people died , 149
were wounded and many women were raped. 753 cases of arson were filed and 211 vehicles were destroyed or severely
damaged. An estimated 6,000 Kuala Lumpur residents — 90% of them Chinese —
were made homeless. The riots surprised Malaysians from every ethnic group.
The Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman who the Malays thought of as too
sympathetic to the nonbumiputras, resigned on 1970 and was replaced by Tun
Abdul Razak. The ruling council banned fighting over the bumiputras privileges
and promoted Malay culture by making the Malay language, Bahasa Malaysia the
official language of government. Many of Malaysia's drastic press laws, originally
targeting racism, also date from this period. The Rukunegara, the de facto
Malaysian pledge of allegiance, is another reaction to the riot. The pledge was

POPULATION & RESOURCES OF KL

Kuala Lumpur – also known as KL – was founded in the 1850s when the Malay Chief of Klang, Raja Abdullah hired
some Chinese laborers to open new and larger tin mines for tin prospectors. The miners landed where the two rivers,
Sungai Gombak and Sungai Lumpur meet to open mines at Ampang, Pudu, and Batu. These mines developed into a
trading post which became a bordered town which is now Kuala Lumpur. Tin prospectors flowed into KL and settled in
Ampang which is now a suburb. The prospectors formed gangs between themselves and wrestled for the durable light-
weight material which was needed really badly at that time. The city is located in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia
where the Klang and Gombak rivers meet which is why it is called Kuala Lumpur which is actually a Malay term which
means “muddy confluence”. People come to KL because of the beautiful cityscape and the amazing weather which is
great for growing fresh vegetables and tropical fruits. The education in KL is free all through secondary school, and the
quality of healthcare is very high. KL has a lot of parks and open spaces for recreational purposes and every part of the
city is well connected by highways because driving is the most frequent way of commuting there. KL has phenomenal
natural resources and minerals which include tin, petroleum, natural gas, copper, and iron ore. The population of KL
which was last checked on 2010 is 1.6 million. There are a lot of different nationalities in KL like Malay, Indian, and
Chinese. The most practiced religion in KL is Islam but a lot of other religions like Christianity, Hinduism, and Buddhism
are also practiced. KL today is a center for finance, insurance, real estate, media, and the arts of Malaysia.
TOP 10 THI NGS NOT TO MISS:
!
Petronas Towers - A visit to KL just isn’t complete unless you’ve visited the
Petronas Towers. The 88-storey towers are the headquarters of Malaysia’s oil and
gas company – Petronas – as well as lots of other corporations. The Dewan
Filharmonik Petronas concert hall –the most important place for classical music in
Southeast Asia – is located between the two towers. On the 41st floor, the
Skybridge that connects the towers gives visitors an amazing view of KL

"
Menara KL Tower - Standing on top of the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve, the
421-metre-high KL Tower is currently the world's fifth tallest structure. The
viewing deck is at least 100 metres higher than the Petronas Tower’s Skybridge
– to get free tickets be sure to arrive early. The observatory deck at the top has
built-in telescopes that are used to zoom in on different places in KL.

#Chinatown - The bright and vibrant Chinatown is a popular bargain hunter’s

heaven that apparently never sleeps. Because it has a lot Oriental culture,

spots in Malaysia. You can find all sorts of things from Chinese herbs to fake
goods there which represents Malaysia’s multicultural background perfectly.

restaurants that have authentic Indian food.

*
Central Market – Before, Central Market – also known as Pasar Seni – was a
simple wet market; today it is a permanent structure that has a variety of
different stores and traders. They sell traditional goods such as batik,
embroidery carvings, souvenirs, sculptures, clothes and other items.

landmarks. The main street is a lively and very cultural scene. It is also one of the
biggest wet markets in Malaysia and very popular with the locals.

&Thean Hou Temple – Thean Hou temple is one of the biggest temples in Southeast
Asia and a very popular tourist attraction. It is a popular wedding venue for the
Chinese people in Malaysia.

(
Sri Maha Sakthi Mohambigai Amman Temple - The thing that makes this
temple so cool is its location – this 100 year-old sanctuary is located right in the
center of the very busy Mid Valley City. There are two statues at its entrance gate
that act as guardians of the temple; this shrine also has a huge Bodhi tree inside

It was a complicated time of the year. As I arrived in the beautiful city of Paris my eyes popped out
as the Eiffel tower was standing beyond my eyes. The view from the huge radio transmitter was out
standing. Sometimes when I’m up there I would imagine the thoughts of terrorists blowing up
famous monuments, nations dropping bombs, innocent people dying, people crying in pain, the city
of Paris being trashed and destroyed and how that would effect the city of Paris today.

paris paragraph

Paris is a huge painting, shining with rich colors like huge fireflies gleaming
in the night. Paris used to be a city of peace founded by the tribe of Gaul’s.
The city soon got destroyed and took over after the ROMANS! In 2007
Paris had a population of 2"153"600 people. Many different people from
around the world came to the city and add new taste to it. Two main reasons
way people come to Paris is for the famous monuments. All the famous
monuments are still here today. Did you know that Paris started off being a
small tiny island on the seine river? Today Paris is a big developed city also
known as the “city of light”! come to Paris and explore the beauty of the
city.

Past to Present
Paris used to be a city where everybody was unorganized. People begged
for money and crimes in every little corner of the city. It was not a very
beautiful city. It had no big famous monuments until In 1889 on the 31 first
of March, Gustave Eiffel designed the Eiffel tower to mark the centennial
of the French revolution.
The Eiffel tower was made with 7,000,000 tons of iron. It was never
planned to keep it permanently but the national monument instantly became
famous so people decided to keep it. In 1909 some people planed to break
down the Eiffel tower but instead it became a huge radio transmitter. Now a
days over 6,000,000 people visit it each year. Now the city Paris is named
for the city of love.

citizens had to work as slaves and workers for the
British. In 1867 Singapore became a crown colony

Eventually, the British left due to social and
governmental problems and some Chinese groups harbor in the late 1800’s
started to immigrate to Singapore. This happened
during the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty, a man
named Sun Yat-Sen founded a branch in Singapore
where Chinese, seeking safety, could immigrate.
Eventually some Chinese ended up staying in
Singapore and the population grew massively.
Singapore started to take in some Chinese culture.
Over the years Singapore had other foreigners visit
the island, but then World War II hit and the British
came back to Singapore to battle the Japanese. The
British commander surrendered and the soldiers were
sent to prison. 25,000 local citizens were killed by the
Japanese.
Many years later a group was formed called the PAP
(people’s action party). It was lead by a man named
Lee Kuan Yew. He was a Chinese man born in
Singapore and wanted a new culture that was a merge

independent country. And Lee Kuan Yew became
the first prime minister. And because the Chinese had
immigrated to Singapore, that’s how the Singaporean

Basic Info
Singapore was established in 1819 by Sir
Thomas Stamford Raffles. It was located on the
Malaysian peninsula. It was a trading port for
fruit and spices for the Europeans and then later
on it became a British settlement. People came to
Singapore at the time because it was a nice
tropical paradise and also for its trading port, but
British explorers settled there for the nice
tropical weather and if anyone on the ship had
scurvy or a sea sickness it was a good place to
stop to regain their health and strength.
People come to Singapore today, not for its hot
tropical weather because the weather there isn’t
tropical anymore. People go there today because
it is a wealthy, nice and wonderful environment
and lifestyle. Singapore’s streets are completely

Singapore’s population is rising but right now
it’s at 4,553,009 citizens; major nationalities
represented there are Chinese, Malay and Indian.
The industrial part of Singapore is very
interesting, most big industries in Singapore are
businesses that were started in the country itself,
like the Night safari and the Singapore zoo, they
are two of the wealthiest industries in Singapore,
but worldwide industries in Singapore include
HSBC, Panasonic and Singapore airlines.
People choose to live in Singapore today for the

Singapore. Singapore today is one of the
wealthiest countries in Asia.
