Distribution problems deal with the logistic processes of distribution of goods from
number of production centres to number of consumer zones.A number of decision
factors are closely related and enfluenced the processes each other.

An effective distribution network design can help organization to increase value

added, reduce costs and increase customer service level. In the top level strategic
decision , the areas of considerations focus on the capacities and location of
suppliers, various plants, distribution centres, and customers as well as the movements
of products between them.A poor and unscientific logistics arrangements will increase
the complexity of the network, which will negatively influence the delivery
performance. The delivery performance is characterized by the speed and
reliability. The other factors are economic order, economic delivery cost, batch
production safety stock level and mode of transportation and delivery.

Optimization of distribution networks have been studied by researchers, using linear

programming, integer programming, multi-objective fractional programming etc.The
techniques applied are time consuming in computation.

In the present thesis we propose to use genetic algorithms to capture multi-criterion

decision- making .The proposed algorithm allows the decision makers to give
weightage to the criteria using pairwise comparision approach. The comparision of
computational results obtained from linear programming and the proposed algorithm
will be analysed.
