Principles of Management
Course Outline

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The major objectives of the course are to familiarize the students with the concept of
management while keeping in view the organizational culture and environment
constraints and global prospective of management, besides, having an in-depth look
at the entrepreneurial ventures such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
In addition the course will provide the best possible critical understanding of what it
means to be a manager and what challenges are faced by him in the dynamic
environment of today. to develop certain competencies (managerial skills) such as
analyzing, thinking, organizing, communicating, reporting and decisions making
skills etc.

After successfully completing the requirements of this course, the students will be
able to:
1. explain fundamental management principles and the tasks of managers;
2. understand and appreciate different managerial functions and their application in
local organizational stetting
3. critically examine current topics in management such as ethical issues, global
issues, managing diversity, total quality management, leadership, motivation,
change, and the decision-making process;
4. chose from the different types of management careers;
5. Work as a member of a "management" team;

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
Classroom activity will consist of lectures, discussions, and exercises. As class
discussions play a significant role in learning and understanding of the subject, it is your
responsibility to adjust your personal schedules and ensure your active presence in all the
class sessions.

You are expected to:

1. Read the assigned materials prior to the scheduled date;


2. Respond to assigned questions;
3. Complete quizzes and cases by specified dates;
4. Participate in class discussion;
5. Stay current with news relevant to the course material;
6. Use related resources as directed by the instructor;
7. Attend all classes;
8. Be prompt for all classes

In addition to reading each chapter before it is covered in class, to enhance your learning
you should do the following:
1. After reading the "chapter opening Gaining the Edge" (a one to two page
incident at the beginning of each chapter), think about what occurred and why.
When you are finished reading the chapter, you should be able to explain what
happened, using the concepts in the chapter.
2. Read the case study Concluding Case at the end of each chapter and think
through the answers to the questions asked.
3. Complete the exercise for Managing in the twenty-first century at the end
of each chapter. Think through how this information can be helpful to you on a
personal and professional level.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

Due to the interactive nature of the course, attendance is crucial. As the course will cover
various subjects, students will lose out on substantial course content by missing class.
Students will not pass the course if they miss more than Six 06 classes. Students are
expected to be seated on time. Those arriving late will be marked accordingly.

CLASS PARTICIPATION:

If class is missed for any reason you will receive zero marks for class participation for
those sessions. Participation includes answering questions based on readings and lectures,
providing relevant information based on personal experiences, relating current events
linked to the material, asking relevant questions, summarizing and discussing case
material.

Part of being a positive participant of the class will include being an active listener and
respectful member of the class. Much of the lectures will be led to result in interactive
discussion; composure and mature class behavior must be maintained at all times.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:

It is mandatory that all written work be well presented using font size 12, a simple and
clear font style, 1.5 spaced, on A4 size page. For any written assignments, the minimum
and maximum length will be specified. Quantity does not translate into quality;
therefore, there is no need to add material unnecessarily. Students must write their essays
and assignments in their own words. Whenever students take an idea, or a passage from
another author, they must acknowledge them by using quotation marks where appropriate
and by proper referencing such as footnotes or citations. Plagiarism is a major academic
offence
