Relationship Between Evaluation &
Instructional Objectives
The broad purpose of evaluation is to
determine what extent the objectives of
the instruction are being attained.
The assessments used to inform the
evaluation should therefore have a direct
relationship with the objectives.
Once you develop instructional objectives, you
are ready to develop ways for evaluating them.
For accomplishing this, two key ideas are
crucial:
First, obtain a good match between types of
assessment instruments and types of objectives.
Second, consider using several data sources to
gain as complete a picture as possible about the
degree of learner attainment of each objective
and the processes involved.
Matching Measures to Objectives
• Various forms of objectives are useful for
describing different types of learning
outcomes.
• Objectives coupled with the evaluation
goals, in turn suggest certain types of
measures.
• Finding the measures that best fit each
objective is an important evaluation task.
Suggested Measures for
Alternative Outcomes
• The ultimate choice of evaluation
measures depends on a variety of factors
other than what is considered in an ideal
sense to be most desirable and valid.
• These factors include cost, time, skill
required for test administration, instrument
availability, and accepted practices in the
educational or training context concerned.
