External Devices:-
 Means of exchanging data between
external environment and computer.
 Connected to an I/O module of computer
through a link.
 Link is used to exchange control, status
and data between I/O module and
external device.
 External device connected to I/O module
is called peripheral.

Figure:- An External Device

Interface to the I/O module of external device is in the

form of control, data and status signals.
 Control signals:- determines what operation that the
device has to perform.
e.g.
READ = send data to I/O module
WRITE = accept data from I/O module

 Data :- are in the form of set of bits to be sent or

received from I/O module.

 Status signals:- indicates the state of device

e.g.
READY = the external device is ready
BUSY = external device is not ready
 Control logic:-controls the device’s operation
whether to send data to computer or
environment or receive from them.

 Transducer:-
for output : it converts data from electrical to
other forms of energy
for input : it converts data from other forms to
electrical

 Buffer :- associated with transducer to

temporarily hold data being transferred
between I/O module and external environment.
Keyboard:
 Each character (128) are represented by a
unique 7 bit binary code known as ASCII .

character

printable control

 Printable : Alphabetic, numeric and special characters

that can be printed or displayed.
 Control : Controlling the printing or displaying of
characters.
Disk Drive:-
 Contains electronics
- for exchanging data, control and status
signals with I/O module.
- for controlling disk read/write mechanism
 Transducer converts magnetic patterns into
the bits in the buffer.
