SIGMA ALPHA

Sigma Alpha is the country’s only professional agricultural sorority, attracting more than 4,000 members
since its founding at Ohio State University in 1978. The purpose of Sigma Alpha is to promote scholarship,
leadership, fellowship, and service among its members, while furthering the development of excellence in
women pursuing carcers in agriculture.
The Kappa Chapter at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo was founded on October 27, 1990 and was the first
chapter established in California, It is one of more than 60 Sigma Alpha chapters nationwide, Sigma Alpha
members play active roles on both college campuses and in their communities.
Kappa Chapter members participate annually in a wide range of community activities, including
Halloween Hoopla and Cal Poly Open House. The sorority supports universal causes by taking part in Relay
for Life to help fund cancer research, Up ‘Til Dawn to benefit St. Jude’s Childrea’s Hospital, and collecting
donations for U.S. troops overseas. Sigma Alpha’s national philanthropy is “Agriculture in the Classroom
program that teaches elementary and middle school students about agriculture, Sisters also often work with
local organizations, including Growing Grounds, a volunteer-based nursery, and the Prado Day Center.
The name Sigma Alpha represents sisfers in agriculture. Through regional conventions, chapter
retreats, sisterhood activities, and industry tours, the sorority helps its members develop social and prof
relationships.
