LION FOR LAMB:

SUMMARY:

The title of the movie is Lions for Lambs. The duration of this movie is 90 minutes and
this movie falls under the area of social study. This story is directed by one of the actors in the
film Robert Redford. The major cast that involve with this Robert Redford as a Professor
Stephen Malley, Janine Roth merly Streep as the reporter. Tom Cruise as a senator jasper irving ,
Michael Pena as ernest Rodriguez, Andrew Garfield as Todd hayes, the university in Carlifonia’
students. This movie is different from the previous movie that I had seen. If being given an
opportunity to watch movie at this age I still did not interest in kind of movie. Actually this
movie is serious movie which is have many hidden agenda why this film being created. However
before critique about the movie, lets first we go again about the summary of the story. This
movie is full of message inside it and the real propaganda of west had revealed a little bit. Before
we go more deeply regarding this story let me fist summarize what I had understand regarding
this movie.

In this first I Actually this movie is a three storyline that have interconnections between
them. The three segments are focusing on the Republican Senator Jasper Irving, the politician
with propaganda ideas on how to stop the war. The second situation is in Carlifonia, Professor
Stepthen Malley calls student Todd Hayes into his office to discuss his future. The third situation
is the lifelong friends Ernest Rodriguez and Arian Finch are sitting with their fellow soldiers as
their commanding officer explains the next mission.

The first situation is the Republican Senator Jasper Irving, a politician with risky idea on
hoe to stop the war. Senator Irving invites a journalist who’s been in the business for more than
forty years to covered the debacle that was the Vietnam War, into his office for an hour long one
on one in order to give her an exclusive on his ambitious new plan of attack. Irving’s plan is to
surprise the enemy by using smaller quick moving military units. Of course that means there’s
less support and backup should things turn nasty, but senator Irving’s ready to take that risk
because, as he tells the reporter he’ll do whatever it takes to turn the war around.

Second situation is while the Senator Irving’s busy explaining his approach to winning
the Iraq and Afganistan, lifelong friends Ernest Rodriguest and Arian Finch are sitting with their
fellow soldiers as their commanding officers explains the next mission, a mission based on the
Senator Irving’s proposal. Their leader admits the plan’s being rushed into fruition, but they are
under orders to carry out the attack. Exactly how rushed the mission is quickly becomes evident
when the unit’s helicopter comes under heavy fire and Rodriguez and Finch are left alone in
enemy territory after falling from helicopter.

In Carlifornia, Professor Stephen Malley calls student Todd Hayes into his office to
discuss his future. Malley sees something special in the kid, despite the fact he’s no longer
showing up in class for regular basis. Once passionate about political science Todd had become
disconnected and cynical. Malley thinks there’s a way to reach him, if only he can get Todd to
become engaged in current affairs. Believing there’s an activist waiting to be awakened, alley
tells Hayes all about two of his favorite students Ernest and Arian who left college because they
wanted to make a difference and could do so by just talking about ways to fix things. They gave
up college life to enlist in the military to see for themselves what’s going on beyond the safe
walls of their Carlifornia College.

Influence of Politics:

In this movie it shows the real situation of the politics games. I did not cynical to politics
because I know that besides the bad there have a good that the politician made .The famous
quote, politics is rubbish. As they have power, they can do whatever they want, they can close
mouth whoever they want, they can buy the media, they can hide the truth and show off the
contribution. There’s none of in this world that have a clean politics. Direct or indirectly they
actually hold their own importance. As in the movie the senator is trying to sell again the
journalist, to reporting the good that what they are doing and will be doing so, this will cause the
public to feel that the senator are good are full of brilliant ideas so that he can influence the
public heart and it is a good promotion for them for future to have a place in white house.

Same goes to our country, our politics system is quite not stable in two three years previously
with the inparty crisis, the prime minister crisis also many more crisis that bring our country to a
situation that not save with the perhimpunan haram and many more. This situation happen
because there are pembangkang. There are expressing what they do not satisfied government do.
Actually it is good to have the pembangkang so that the government not too relax with their
position and not do whatever they want because there’s something else that looking their
movement.

If we relate the politics shown in the movie with our politics in the educational systems, what I
can say is that every time new minister hold the position in the ministry there must be changes
that occur. Sometimes what they do is actually redundant with the existing policy that have. For
example the cluster schools also the high performance school. Actually there’s no big different
between this two type of schools but if the school get into each of the category the fund that they
will get is 150000 per year. So if the cluster school is also hign performance school they will get
300000 per year. Besides most of his school are in the urban area and most of their parents are
high SES So means that they have a lot of money to do the activity. However, how about the
school in rural? How about school In rural that not really excellence, they don’t have fund to do
activity as the parent also low SES and poor. For me focusing in the urban because to show to
the educated parents that they have brilliant to plan meanwhile noneducated parents which stays
in villages only just follow what government do because they do not know really well about all
of the policy. That is the hidden agenda of the politician in my point of view. Politics cannot run
from stategy to hold the citizens vote, that is the reality. But sometimes it makes the others
especially the poor one be the prey of the situation like the title of this movie, Lions for lambs.

Influence of teacher:

"It is what teachers think, what teachers believe and what teachers do at the level of the
classroom that ultimately shapes the kind of learning that young people get." Andy Hargreaves
and Michael Fullan

Teacher is a person who teaches students or kids. Teacher plays a big influence in students’
thinking and mind set. As from the movie it was seen that the lecturer trying to influencing the
students’s mind toward the army. Two of his previous students had off their study to be in the
army squat. Hence from that situation at last of the movie I think Todd also influenced by his
teacher and go to join the army squat. This situation shows that how teacher influence students.

If we look at our education system, teacher not just teaching but they also as a role model.
Students will follow what teacher’s word and even in the primary school especially, the pupils
will thick to their teacher’s word and if the parents said that is not true the pupil will said that no
my teacher said this and this. So here teacher is very important in shaping the nation. For me as a
teacher in the future is a big responsibility hold in my shoulder because I’m carrying the ation in
future. Teacher need to be positive, good morality, shows only the good things in front of
students and try to influence students to a things that a good moral value.

Media:

The media has a huge impact on society and also public opinion. They can shape the public
opinion in different ways depending on what the objective they want to achieve. In the last 50
years the media influence has grown proportionally first with the telegraph, then the radio, the
newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet. All of these media have a great influence
toward people mind set. Same goes into the film, the senator trying to sell the journalist and ask
her to write their brilliant plan so that it can influence public.

We live in the society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the
right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education,
personal relationships, travelling and anything else that we have to do. Normal situation for
people in the urban usually wakes up and checks the tv news or newspaper, then goes to work.
That is why , media is very important agent, the problem is that media usually is hold by the
most powerfull people in the country that is why media is need to be a freedom organization so
that all the information given is more fair and square. The public need to be wise, they need not
just accept hundred percent on information that they get. What we need to be aware is that most
of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact, our assumptions and
our own experience. In our work we usually know what we have to do base on our experience
and studies, however on our daily lives we rely on the media to get the current news and facts
about what is important and what we should be aware of. We have put our trust on the media as
an authority to give us news, entertainment and education. However, the influence of mass media
on our kids, teenagers and society is so big that we should know how it really works.

However, nowadays not like before people are cleverer to identify which one is good and which
one is the new just to show off. That is what happen in our world today. This is because world
had become more smaller and all the information or news is easy to be reveal by people with the
existence of internet. For example, after the attacks of 911 the media gave a huge coverage of the
event and exposed Osama guilty for the attack as they were told by the authorities. This shaped
the public opinion to support the war on terrorism, the same happened with the war on Iraq. The
problem is that if media received un accurate information then the public opinion supported a
wrong cause, this is the power of public opinion influence
One could read Lions for Lambs, a short yet talky social studies film, as Robert Redford's sincere
apology for turning a generation into mediocre (brmutu rendah) indie filmmakers instead of
activists. Working from a script by Matthew Michael Carnahan, Redford engineers this as a
series of two-handed conversations occurring simultaneously over the course of a fateful hour.In
the Hindu Kush, a pair of Army Rangers (Derek Luke and Michael Peña) are mortally wounded
and stranded in the snow. In Washington DC, reporter Janine Roth (Meryl Streep) interviews
handsome Republican Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise), who has a new strategy for winning
the war in Afghanistan. Roth had called Irving the future of his party. Now she wonders if that
wasn't "pejorative."

And in "a California university"—the production notes say it's Berkeley—a wary poli sci
professor (Redford) interviews a warier student (Andrew Garfield) who is making a choice for
frat life and hedonism.

As Redford is the director, you don't exactly need a compass to find the moral center of this
drama. Redford's Dr. Malley is essentially John Kerry—a Vietnam vet who turned against the
war so that he could be both hawk and dove (or lion and lamb).

The cinematographer is Phillipe Rousselot, and he knows how to restore Redford to the iconic
beauty he once had. In any case, Redford beaten by age is still Redford. This film would have
had a better chance of rhetorical tension if the professor had been a Paul Giamatti—someone
smaller than life, someone who looked like he knew what it was like to be really roughed up.

In a flashback, two of Dr. Malley's students, who became the hapless (malang, nasib buruk)
soldiers, also have a plan, which they present as a class project: a draft to bring young men and
women either into a Vista-like volunteer plan or the military.

Streep's Roth, a reporter who somehow made the leap from Time magazine into broadcast media,
is seen resisting a devil's deal. Irving, who had once sold her the war, now tries to sell her "and
the few who are paying attention" on a new strategy, as a scoop for her. In this acting battle,
Streep looks sniffly, like she needs a Benadryl. She's unable to keep up with the tricks of this
senator whose master plan is to unveil a small-unit ambush plan like General Abrams' strategy in
Vietnam. Creighton Abrams is a great name to drop, and I was happy to hear Streep's character
drop it. The rewriting of Vietnam War continues apace; essential to the rewrite is the story that
Abrams' strategies would have led to success, if it weren't for the public and senatorial
backstabbing of our troops. We need to beware the rewriting effort currently underway already
on Iraq. That's why questions like Irving's thundering "Do you want to win the war on terror?
YES or NO?" deserve a prompt answer: "Resign right now or be voted out."

This wishy-washy liberal film shows its lack of backbone in the title's mangling of a famous
World War One quote: it wasn't "lambs leading lions" but "jackasses leading lions." Calling our
leadership sheepish is one thing. At this point we might have appreciated something a little more,
eh, pejorative.
