JOB DESCRIPTION

1) Internship Description - This intern will work with the city of Phoenix Public
Information Officer who works with the city’s eight councilmembers. As needed,
this intern will assist other Public Information Officers with various duties. This
internship will expose students to challenging PR activities including:
• Prepare news releases and media advisories for council events
• Assist with the production of “On the Issues” television shows for each
Councilmember - Brainstorm topics to feature on each show, book guests,
prepare scripts, attend tapings.
• Draft monthly columns for local newspapers (as needed)
• Attend meetings (with councilmembers, PIO staff and city departments),
as needed
• Update websites for each councilmember/city departmennts
• Develop ideas to gain exposure for each councilmember
• Assist with media tracking and prepare TiVo clips, as requested

2) Desired candidate qualifications - We are looking for a candidate who is a junior,


senior or graduate student who attends the Walter Cronkite School of
Journalism and has knowledge of writing news releases, taken public relations
classes and may have already had an internship in this area.

3) Internship Details - This is a non-paid internship for approximately 20 hours a


week. Fall internship dates flexible – August to December. We would prefer
set hours of at least three days a week and we are very flexible when the student
may need to modify the schedule for a class, event etc.
