Job Title: Communications Assistant Department: Strategy, Partnerships and Communications

Reports to: Communications Officer Start Date: May 2021

The Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) is a leading development finance organization that supports

incomes in rural and marginalized communities in Africa. Launched in 2008, AECF has invested in 292
businesses across more than 40 value chains and 26 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

We focus specifically on agribusiness, renewable energy, and climate technologies, while also addressing the
crosscutting themes of gender, youth, and fragile contexts. In just over a decade, we have impacted more than
27.7 million lives, created close to 24,000 jobs, and leveraged over US $740 million in matching funds.

AECF is headquartered in Kenya, with offices in Côte d’Ivoire and Tanzania.

JOB SUMMARY
Under the guidance and supervision of the Communications Officer, the Communications Assistant will
support the implementation of the AECF’s communication strategy and plans to increase awareness of the
program’s activities with key stakeholders, building a vibrant brand. The role holder will support the
development of communication products and manage digital content on the website and social media
platforms. Work closely with key staff in the Strategy, Partnerships and Communications department to
aggregate, package, and tailor information gathered through AECF activities, and disseminate to stakeholders
with the aim of building the brand as well as establish AECF as a thought leader in Africa in the identified areas.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Brand Management
• Develop a monthly social media calendar to manage the various social media accounts and
Continuously generate new digital media content in form of share graphics, short videos, info
graphics, photo stories, Tweets, Facebook posts, website content links etc. and ensure consistent
and regular posting of messages in all platforms.
• Liaise with Programme and sector leads in the documentation of project activities, milestones, and
successes in the form of case studies, human-interest stories, video, and photo stories for internal
and external dissemination in line with approved communications plans.

Events Management
• Support staff participation in key strategic events, including registration and speaking engagements.
• Coordinate’s communications activities and events ranging from press conferences to large seminars
and meetings, involving external and/or internal audiences.
• Update and maintain the calendar of events.

Media
• Monitor the African and International media for relevant news stories (Agriculture, Renewable
Energy, Gender, Youth) and trends.
• Build and maintain a database of African journalists and media houses across the African continent
in line with the AECF media liaison strategy.
• Support the communications team with media planning activities such as media invites, media tours,
and media round tables.
• Produce news summary for dissemination to staff.

Internal Communications
• Promote knowledge and information sharing in the organisation by engaging different units and
facilitating seamless exchange of information with both internal and external parties.
• Support staff engagement activities, including setting monthly staff meetings, activities, talks, brown
bags, etc.
• Contribute to the development and circulation of the internal newsletter.
• Support in the planning and execution of roundtables, brown bags etc.
• Support in the dissemination of key publications and communications materials to staff.

Monitoring and Learning


• Continuously monitor and evaluate the communications activities reach and impact and provide
period reports or as requested.
• Provide insights on trends, news developments, or changing circumstances that may impact the AECF
and its work.

Administrative Coordination
• Support the teams and liaise with the Admin Assistant on event-planning and logistics, including
booking venues, set up, dispatch of collaterals.
• In collaboration with admin and procurement, undertake procurement related requirements for the
comms department including requisitions, development of TORs, supervise the production of
collaterals ensuring that the required quality and brand colors are adhered to, inventory of the
communications material in store etc.
• Develop a catalogue of videos, publications, papers, case studies of all AECF related materials and
assist the Communications Officer to maintain the organizational video and photo repository.

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS
• Undergraduate in Communication related field (Communication, Journalism or Public Relations).

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
• Any additional professional qualifications in Communications, Marketing and Public Relations

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

• At least three (3) year experience of working in a communication, public relations, or media role,
working in development sector is an added advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to analyse and communicate complex information to a wide audience including
non-technical audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, providing support at a range of
organisational levels.
• Demonstrated ability to identify and produce compelling human-interest stories.
• Proven influencing, negotiating and interpersonal skills in a range of contexts and for multiple
audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects, to prioritise work and meet
deadlines.
• Demonstrated experience of the use of social and mass media for advocacy.
• Experience in planning and coordinating major public events.
• Experience in development-related activities in Africa.
• A working knowledge of French will be an advantage.
