Modern via Traditional Production Layouts Modern Traditional 1.

Top priority:
flexibility 1. Top priority : line balance

2. Strategy: flexibility - but reduce rebalance to match the changing demand

2. Strategy: stability - long production runs to reduce rebalance of production line

3. Flexible labor: move to where the current workload is great 3. Assume fixed labor
assignments

4. Employ maximal preventive maintenance to keep equipment from breading down

4. Use inventory buffers to cushion effects of equipment failure

5. Need human ingenuity to provide flexibility and ways around bottlenecks

5. Need sophisticated analysis (e.g. using computers) to evaluate and cull the many options

6. Supervisor may lead design effort and will adjust plan as needed

  6. Plan by staff
7. Slow for quality problems; speed up when quality is right

7. Plan to run at fixed rate; send quality problems offline

8. U-shaped or parallel lines 8. Linear or L-shaped lines

9. Put stations close together and avoid conveyors

9. Conveyorized material movement is desirable

10. Buy small machines; add more copies as needed

10. Buy 'Super machines' and keep them busy

11. Applied even to capital-intensive subassembly and fabrication work

11. Applied in labor intensive assembly

12. Strive for mixed-model production, even in subassembly and fabrication

12. Run mixed models where labor content is similar from model to model

    Criteria for a Good Layout

- Maximum flexibility

- Maximum co-ordination between departments and sections

- Maximum use of volume

- Maximum visibility of men and materials

- Maximum accessibility of servicing and maintenance points

- Minimum distance

- Minimum handling by the use of conveyors, lifts, chutes, hoists and

trucks

- Maximum comfort-ability by avoiding draughts, poor lighting, excessive

sunlight, heat, noise, vibrations and smells, etc.

- Inherent Safety by avoiding danger to be exposed. Allow medical

facilities and follow safety regulations.

- Maximum Security by providing safeguards against fire, moisture, theft

and general deterioration.

- Visible and enough routes for exits and entrances
