Recap

How does
Recall on Photosynthesis
water get
absorb
from the
soil into
and move
around
the plant?

How does
food get
from the
leaves to
other
parts of
the plant?
What you will learn
(Transport Structures)
• Xylem vessels and phloem (Vascular Tissue)
– Understand their role in the transport system
of a flowering plant
• Root
– Understand its structure (root hairs) and
functions
– Facilitate water & ion (minerals) uptake
Transport Structures
in a flowering plant

XYLEM PHLOEM
Xylem

Long hollow tube extending from the root to the

leaves
Structures
1.Dead tissue Water
2.Long and empty lumen transport

3.Walls are thicken strengthen

with lignin Mechanical
support
Xylem

a)Conducts water and dissolved minerals from the roots

to all other parts of the plant

b)Provides mechanical support to the plant due to the

presence of lignin

c)Contains mainly xylem vessel

Phloem

• Transport manufactured
food (sugar) from leaves to
other parts of the plant.

Absorption of Water
What are the
functions and
adaptations of Root/
Root hairs?

Functions
1.Anchor the plant
2.Specialized in absorption of
Adaptations water & dissolved minerals
1.Long and narrow
 Increase surface area to volume ratio
2.Cells are alive
 Provide energy for active transport
3.Root hairs have cell sap of higher concentration than surrounding soil
solution
 Cell sap contains sugar, mineral salts which helps to prevent water
leaking out of cell. Assist in osmosis
ROOT HAIR CELL
Movement of water
molecules by osmosis will
continue on until they arrive
at the xylem.
Group Activity
Instructions
• Group yourselves according to the list.
• In this activity, each group will be given
different topics related to the lesson today.
– Topics will be drawn by group representative.
• You are given 5 minutes to draw/write on the
manila card your understanding of the topic.
– They may be in the form of symbols, drawings, or
words. It is up to your creativity.
• Choose a representative who would explain to
the class about your Graffiti.
• Then the Graffiti are to be circulated among
the other groups.
– You are given 3 minutes to add or correct any
information on the other groups’ graffiti.
