“DEMOCRACY AND ARISTOTELIAN CATHARSIS”

SYNOPSIS: Regardless of its origin –the prevailing view favors the dithyramb – and
evolution that shaped its form, tragedy is a complex art genre, developed in a culturally
advanced society. And that society is no other than the Athenians’ ‘politeia’, which
invented authentic democracy. How exactly does democracy evolve from monarchy? What
exactly are the dimensions of democracy and its secrets? How exactly does tragedy evolve
from the dithyramb? What exactly are the dimensions of tragedy and its secrets? Are
democracy and tragedy interrelated? How exactly? How does tragedy constitute political
education and culture? In a continuing effort to develop our political agoge and education
here in the Hellenic diaspora in New York, these are some of the aporias, which this event
resolves, through:
a) an introductory lecture (prolegomena),
b) a theatrical sketch (didache) and
c) public discourse (panel).
