“DEMOCRACY AND ARISTOTELIAN CATHARSIS”
SYNOPSIS: Regardless of its origin –the prevailing view favors the dithyramb – and evolution that shaped its form, tragedy is a complex art genre, developed in a culturally advanced society. And that society is no other than the Athenians’ ‘politeia’, which invented authentic democracy. How exactly does democracy evolve from monarchy? What exactly are the dimensions of democracy and its secrets? How exactly does tragedy evolve from the dithyramb? What exactly are the dimensions of tragedy and its secrets? Are democracy and tragedy interrelated? How exactly? How does tragedy constitute political education and culture? In a continuing effort to develop our political agoge and education here in the Hellenic diaspora in New York, these are some of the aporias, which this event resolves, through: a) an introductory lecture (prolegomena), b) a theatrical sketch (didache) and c) public discourse (panel).
