‫أحكام االم‬

Rules of the Laam

The Laam will always be recited light except in the ‫ – لفظ الجاللة‬the
name of Allah.
Both the Laam’s in the word Allah will be recited heavy or thick
when there appears before the word ‫ هللا‬or ‫ اللهم‬a Fatha َ or a
Dhamma َ. The Alif after the two Laams will be heavy if the
Laams are heavy.

If there appears a Kasra َ before either word, the Laam’s in the

word Allah will be read light or thin. The Alif after the two Laams
will be light if the Laams are light.
You could take as a general point that if a letter has an Alif
appearing after it, whatever the state (in this context it is either
thick or thin) of the letter, the Alif will follow it. So for example, the
Alif in ‫ قا‬will be read heavy since the ‫ ق‬will be read heavy (since it
is a heavy letter).
Please take note that if you to say Allah, the Fatha in the
beginning will be light, and only the Laams in the word Allah will
be heavy. It takes some practice to get used to this Inshallah.
Since we say Allah’s name so many times a day, we should be
able to get plenty of practice in.
