Psalm 118
Give thanks, the LORD is good,
God’s love is for ever!
Now let Israel say,
“God’s love is for ever!”
Let all who revere the LORD say,
“God’s love is for ever!”

The theme of this thanksgiving psalm is the Lord’s eternal love. This is not some
puppy love, or even a fervent infatuation. This love is precious and priceless. The
love song has national overtones. It is harmonized in domestic circles. It
reverberates in the individual.
The psalmist describes the power of the Lord’s love. The LORD is a responsive
lover. The LORD’S love is liberating. It is responsive. The LORD’S love is
enabling. The LORD is a constant companion.
In distress I called to the LORD,
Who answered and set me free.
The LORD is with me, I fear not.
What can they do to me?
The LORD my help is with me;
I can face my foes.

The LORD is reliable. The LORD is trustworthy. No human being can compare
to this One. No earthly ruler or government entitlement program can provide and
protect the created like the Creator.
Better to trust in the Lord
Than rely on human help.
Better to trust in the Lord
Than rely on princes.

Bothered by adversaries? No problem. Surrounded by enemies? No problem.

Encircled by pests? Swarming pests with stinging bites? Not to worry. Caught in
the searing blaze of a brushwood fire? Do not fret.
My strength is the Lord’s Strength.
The Lord is my Song.
My Song has become my Savior.
The Power of the Song
Strikes with precision
the fortissimo of victory.

Death stands jilted at the LORD’S gates of Justice. Only the just will enter this
gate.
This is the day the LORD has made,
Let us rejoice and be glad!
