Borrowers of loan shark usually came from different races. The three
main borrowers in Malaysia are Malay, Chinese and Indian. After Minister of
Interior, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein declared all out war on loan
sharks at June 2008, cases that involved the illegal money lender dropped by
163 cases in year 2009.

In Figure 1, there is a graphic representation of the total amount of

people became borrowers of loan shark in 2008 and 2009 based on races
differences. As we can see, in 2008 almost 636 people from different races
got loans from this unlicensed money lender. However, the strategy that has
been carried out by the government has shown degradation from previous
year to 473 cases in 2009.

According to Malaysian National News Agency, Bernama, loans

involving approximately RM 87 million came from loan shark for both years.
In 2009 the Chinese represent the largest number of borrowers 70 % (331
people), Malays 21 % (99 people) and Indian 9 % (43 people). Gambling was
the main reason why Chinese keep borrows money from loan sharks
whereas, most of the Malays borrowed for share investments and
businesses. The percentage contributed by Indians was due to their business
and lifestyle. This is all the main reason why they decided to choose loan
shark as money lender.
