Activity: To show that seeds of many plants are edible in nature

Aim: To demonstrate that fruits and vegetables are not the only edible plant parts.

Seeds of many plants are eaten commonly. A variety of plant species can provide
edible seeds.

Materials:

1. Corn cobs or bhuttas


2. Cooking pan with lid
3. Cooking oil
4. Glass bowl

Procedure:

1. Take fresh corn cobs or bhutta from your nearby market.


2. Carefully remove the husk and twist the corn kernels from the cob into a
fresh bowl.

3. With the help of an adult at your home, place a cooking pan on the stove top.
4. Heat a few tablespoons of cooking oil in the pan. Then add a cup of kernels to the
pan.

5. Place the lid on top. The kernels start to pop. Let the corns pop and cook until they are
nearly stopped.
6. Once the corns are properly cooked, place them in a fresh bowl. They are read to be
eaten.

Observation: The kernels of the corn have enough moisture in them which helps them to
pop.

Result: An edible part is the one which can be consumed as food. The seeds of corn or
maize plants are edible in nature.
