Technology is everywhere we look. It has enhanced our ability to

perform multiple duties at work. Electronics have become a

necessity for most companies. The company I work for is Computer

Science Corporation (CSC), one of the leading military defensive

contracting companies in the world. CSC works together with other

defensive companies to provide cutting edge technology. Such

advancements entail simulators to replace actual devices. This

training saves time and money.

In 1974 the Army

acknowledged the need for a new

type of training. The Army’s need for

a better logistical management of fuel

resources and reduction of ammunition usage spawned the creation

of simulator trainers. Program Executive Office for Simulation,

Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) was formed August 1,

1992 in Orlando, FL, after the United State’s victory in Desert

Storm. After the war, the new found need for simulation devices

fueled the funding for new technology applied to military training.

The desires were for simulators to accurately duplicate the vehicle

traits. This made simulators more realistic training devices.

I currently work as a contractor for the
Army National Guard maintaining M1A1
Abrams tank simulators. I have seen
firsthand the importance of having
simulators for the National Guard to use.
The Guardsmen are required to do
training once a month and two weeks out
of the year. This means their time is
limited along with resources. During
training weekends, weaknesses can be identified and corrected in the training
device. This benefits the Guardsmen and saves tax payers millions of dollars.
Training devices help fill some of the void caused by lack of resources. Such
resources may include: ammunition, fuel, and funding. The last total estimated
cost for a M1A1 gunnery was 1.4 million dollars. The estimated cost of simulated
training on the M1A1 gunnery is $500,000. Technology has allowed the military
to stay sharp and well trained with limited resources.
M1A1 Abrams is the main battle tank of the
United States Army. Top speed is 41.5 mph
produced by turbine engines. It takes forty
liters of jp8 to start. Total weight when
combat ready (fully loaded) is 67.5 tons. At
top speed a crew of four can engage and
destroy moving enemy vehicles. The Abrams has many different types of ammo
but the most expensive round in service is close to 9,000.00

M2 Bradley’s fighting vehicle is an armor

personnel carrier. Max speed is 42mph and
weighs 22tons battle ready. The main gun
shoots a 25mm round. At 500 rounds per
minute the armor piercing round can go
through 10 inches of regular steel.

HMMWV or Humvee is the work horse

of the Army. As of 1995 the Army had
over 190,000 of these vehicles. There
are over 25 different variations of this vehicle. The HMMWV can be a mobile
anti air defense to an ambulance.
