The Kamehameha Schools Strategic Plan 2000-2015 is a comprehensive document
outlining the school’s mission, values, vision, guiding principles, summary of goals and
priorities, goals, implementation framework and governance process. The planning
process engaged a wide spectrum of the Kamehameha ‘ohana and Hawaiian community
in the development of this plan. The plan was developed in three phases. From the results
of the internal and external scans 16 strategic issues were identified.
There were twenty issues that were also identified that had potential implications for all
areas of the organization and for how all 16 strategic issues are addressed. Five goals
resulted that governed the plan. There are: Goal 1: Provide and facilitate a wide-range of
educational programs to serve more people of Hawaiian ancestry; Goal 2: Work with
families and communities; Goal 3: Cultivate, nurture, perpetuate and practice
‘Ike Hawai’i; Goal 4: Foster the development of leaders who focus on service to others
Goal 5: Optimize current resources and develop new resources; Goal 6: Steward lands
and resources; and Goal 7: Develop a dynamic, nurturing learning community. Within
Goal 7 is the technology statement: 7.1 – Build an environment that promotes learning.
Use technology and other strategies to enhance learning, performance, and the
dissemination of knowledge.

Technology in the Classroom

This is one of the last issues of Kamehameha Journal of Education. This
theme issue contains 20 articles dealing with technology in the
classroom. Among the articles are “Distance learning and the Future of
Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estate”, “Technology and “Multiple
Intelligences”, Computer Learning for Young Children”, “Free in First
Grade: Technology in One Classroom”, “New Technologies, New
Curricula” and several others. This issue was representative of
Kamehameha’s commitment and plans to assure technology was going
to be an important aspect in Kamehameha students’ education.
Kamehameha Schools System-Wide Professional Development Plan of Action
(Draft as of 5/13/05)
The Kamehameha Schools System-wide Professional Development Task Force
collaborated to develop action steps that would clearly articulate the critical link between
improved student learning and the professional learning of leaders and teachers in the
Kamehameha Schools System. The Task Force engaged in this work during the months
of April and May, 2005. Their work was built upon the foundation pieces of The
Kamehameha Schools Strategic Plan, 2000 – 2015, The Kamehameha Schools
Philosophy of Education and The Kamehameha Schools Education Technology Plan.
Within the document are action steps to reach two goals; to become proficient in applying
the foundational technology skills, and to integrate technology to improve teaching,
learning, productivity, and communication. Kamehameha and ISTYE National
Educational Technology Standards and Performance Indicators for Teachers are
provided, as well as a Technology Professional Development Overview and Technology
Proficiency Training Levels.

KS Maui Campus Laptop Program: Year One Evaluation Report

This document is the one-year evaluation report of the KA Maui Laptop Program. It is
clearly stated what was learned and key recommendations for continued success. With a
provide background of the program’s development, Tibbetts explains when the Maui
campus initiated the laptop program. and the process the program went through to the end
of the first year. The evaluation is broken down into areas of study: School
Implementation and Increasing Teacher Efficacy. The report confirms that the program
was successful, that there were some challenges, it was received well by the majority and
that the road ahead requires moving users to the stage of deeper reforms to teaching.

Putting Technology-Supported Best Practices into Play:

for Teaching, Learning, and Management
Rockman, S. & Collins, S. (2005). Putting Technology-Supported Best
Practices into Play: Roadmap for Kamehameha Schools and the Use of
Technology for Teaching, Learning, and Management The Roadmap’s
main goal was to provide the stakeholders of the KS organization with
information that guides future practice of the use of technology in
designing instruction. It is a roadmap for evolving the pedagogy and
infrastructure that enhance Kamehameha Schools’ (KS) Plan for
collective and individual action by the KS community. The plan is
divided into instructional best practices and institutional best practices.
With instructional best practices the areas of instruction will implement
technology are process writing, science and mathematics, problem-based and project-
based learning, 21st Century skills, individualization of the academic program, and
portfolios. In the area of institutional best practices, professional
development, technology infrastructure, institutional communication is laid out for
addressing the improvement of instruction. Recommendations for
future action are stated, to build on the work of the existing school-site
technology committees and the system-wide Educational Technology
Task Force.
