Samenvatting in het Engels: “Love by design”

There is a boy who is called Tom. Tom will going to study Art and
Fhotography at Silverton College. But he can’t, because his exams results are
terrible. His father says: “You must find a job or go back to school.”
But Tom hates school, so he must find a job. He finds a job as an assistant in
a library. It isn’t there very busy and sometimes Tom draws pictures of the
people who come into the library.
One day a girl comes into the library because it is raining. Tom tries to draw
her. She is very pretty, her name is Rita Tatchi and she makes her own
clothes. A few days later, Rita comes back to the library. She is sad, because
she wants to be a model, but nobody wants to help her. Tom has a great idea:
he can help her to find work. He makes fotos of Rita and send them off to ten
different fashion magazines. Nobody is interested, but then arrives a letter
from dream.
It says that the pictures are not good enough to go in the magazine but they
love the coat that Rita wears in the photos. They will know the name of the
designer. Rita is sad, because nobody wants her. Then Rita finds an
advertisement in the Silverton News. It says: ‘model wanted’. Rita is exited
and calls the number directly, Tom doesn’t like the advertisement but he
doesn’t want to upset Rita. Rita and Tom meet Mr. Spooner and they have to
sign a contract about Rita becoming a model. Tom isn’t very happy because
he doesn’t like the way the contract is written and he can’t read the little
letters. And he don’t trust Mr Spooner too, but he has to sign when he sees
Rita’s happy face, it is Rita’s only chance to become a model. Then
Mr.Spooner tells Rita that she must pay him £300 fee for training her to
become a model. But first she must makes coffee and sweep the floor of the
office. As Mr. Spooner leaves, Rita is angry that Tom doesn’t trust Mr
Spooner and then Tom says that he will never see her again.
Tom feels sorry. One day Danny (Tom’s friend) comes into the library. He had
spoken to Rita a week ago. Rita has a lot of problems, because her father
says that she must marry Bungo, a old and ritch man. Tom will go to Rita:
she lives in a bad area of Silverton. But when he arrives: Rita doesn’t life
there anymore, says her sister Shana, and nobody knows where Rita is. The
next day Tom meets Danny for advice, for finding Rita. Danny says: “Go after
each place you went with Rita.” So he goes to cafe Big John’s and sees Rita
sit down with Mr. Spooner. His arm is around Rita her shoulders. They don’t
see Tom and he leaves, angry, again. One day Tom has to work in the library,
Rita comes in. She tells him that she lives with her friend Nathalie, and that
she can’t come home, because she won’t marry Bungo. Tom won’t listen. He
says: “The library is closing now. Please leave now.” Rita put a small present
with a card on it on his desk and walks out. He unwrapped the present. Inside
the present, there is a beautiful watch. He thinks that Spooner has paid for the
watch. And then… he smashs the watch against the disk and he tears the
card. So he doesn’t read that Rita loves him.
On Valentine’s Day arrives a card. Tom opens the envelope: it was a wedding
invitation. Rita and Mr. Sponner were getting married on 17th April. Tom
showes the invitation to Danny. Danny says: “I can’t believe it’s true. Perhaps
Rita wants you to stop her getting married.”
Some day, there comes a detective into the library. He has papers with him,
with the signature of Tom on it. The detective tells him that Mr. Spooner tricks
people to get money. This people help him to steal money from the bank. Tom
says he didn’t know that, so the detective asks him to find Rita and Mr.
Spooner. They make a plan to arrest Mr. Spooner at his wedding.
The day of Rita’s wedding there is an accident, so the detective and Tom are
almost too late for the wedding. Fortunately Rita and Mr. Spooner are inside
the building. The registrar asks: “Is there any reason why these two people
cannot be married?” Tom shouts: “Yes! Mr. Spooner is a criminal!” Rita and
Mr. Spooner run away and escape. For the next months Tom works very hard
and studies for his exams in June.
At the end of August, Tom get his exams results: he passes the exams with
excellent grades.
So he can go to Silverton College.
Shana and Danny try to tell Tom something about Rita, but he won’t listen.
Ant then there’s a party for the new students of Silverton College and
everyone will be wearing costums and a mask. After midnight they may take
off the mask. Tom dances all night with Cinderella and after midnight he sees
it’s Rita he is been dancing with.
Rita is a new student too: she is going to study Fashion design.
And then… they fall in love!
