COMPARISON OF IMAGING METHODS—CT VERSUS MRI

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are imaging
methods allowing doctors to look at the brain without opening the skull. They have
different principles and underlying risks. Some of their major differences are
summarized in the following table.

CT MRI
Principle X ray Magnetic field
Radiation Yes No
Harm/limitation · Radiation Claustrophobia
· Contrast allergy, renal Not for those with medical
impairment implants

Time Taken About 5 minutes About 30 minutes
Cost (HKD)
-Non-contrast 1400 3100
-Contrast 1900 4000
-With CTA/MRA 2850 4700
