Political Slogans!

Today in class, we discussed the Jim Crow laws, along with the historical segregation of
America. We even viewed sensitive pictures with hateful messages such as white only; go back
to Africa; etc. Fortunately we also viewed texts that spoke of people acting against these violent
and racist policies (like the students and their peaceful sit- ins) or Langston Hughes’ powerful
words. For this Assignment you will be an activist acting against policies that you deem unjust.

For this Assignment you will create a political slogan in response to any issue you deem unjust.
( It does not have to necessarily deal with Civil Rights movement) Like actual marchers, you will
put your slogan on a sign which you will present to the class this Friday. You have the freedom
to create you slogan on any issue you would like, however you will have to write a one- page
rational explaining the problem you are speaking out against, and how your slogan or phrase
criticizes this issue

Some Examples of Slogans are:

We Shall Overcome!
Vote or Die
Hey! I was using those rights.
Where’d the Constitution go?

Tips for a successful slogan

-Be Creative! We will have class time on this; and you will be supplied with construction paper
and markers. In the Hughes poem we were met with a lot of satire and sarcasm, feel free to use
these literary tools (they make for great slogans)

-Pick a topic that is important to you! I am allowing you to have a great deal of choice in what
your slogan is about, take advantage of that. I realize that everyone does not share the same
passion for causes, so make us care about yours!

-Explain! Although satire can be wonderful, sometimes it is not accessible to everyone. Make
sure you explain your slogan and why you used it? More importantly I would like you to make
connections on how these words that you will draw on construction paper speak against unjust
aspects of our society. (I’m alluding to the power your words carry)

This assignment is worth 30 points (the 1 page rationale being 20 points)
