Design Evaluation

I used all three main properties of color within my color harmony to enhance my painting of

the postal scale. I used intensity, hue and value. I lowered the intensity of many colors by mixing

them with their complements. I also lowered their intensity by adding grey, black and white to

them. On the face of the scale I lowered the intensity of white by adding yellow and grey to get a

more rustic color. I also used many similar hues. For example I used at least five different hues of

brown in the ladder. This gives the ladder visual depth. I used value by lightening and darkening all

the different hues in my painting. When I would mix a color I liked, I would change its value by

adding black or white. Knowing the different properties of color definitely enhanced my creativity

on this project.

It was easier to make my painting look more uniform by restricting my color usage to one

color harmony. I picked natural colors as my color harmony to give my painting a more realistic

feel. If I had used warm bright colors, the painting would have a make-believe feel to it. If I had

used cool colors, my painting would look more solemn. The browns and greys in my painting give

it a dense feeling. It was surprising to create so many different colors using only grey, brown and

green as a base.

I used my newly-gained knowledge of color to give my painting a uniformed and visually

appealing look. I also used one specific color scheme and gave my painting a stronger presence

rather than a whimsical one. Overall, I am happy with the outcome of my painting and enjoyed

using special color techniques to enhance it.
