Bau.

REPORT DONE BY : HAROLD ANAK JAMES MIJIEN

MATRIX NO. : D20102043678

 INTRODUCTION

My School is Sekolah Kebangsaan Bobak/Sejinjang, Bau. It is situated in kampong Bobak,

Singai Bau and it is near the mountain. It is about 25km from the school to Bau. The school has
about 186 pupils and has 6 classes from year 1 to year 6. Pupils in the school are all Bidayuh.

Teaching English in the school is not easy. It is because the pupils here seldom speak the
language they are more used to speak in Bahasa Malaysia or their mother tongue that is the
Bidayuh language. So each year in order to make the pupils involved and have interest in English
Language our school have implemented two English programmes in which it is to be carried out
by our English Panel ( Panitia Bahasa Inggeris ) every year. The two programmes are Story
Telling competition and Choral Speaking. My report will be on those two implemented
programmes.

A. Story Telling Competition report.

Story Telling is the conveyance of events in words, images and sound often by
improvisation or embellishment with decorative details and ideas. Story telling
competition can provide teachers details of what their pupils have learn and achieve
during English lesson in class.

1. Aims

(1.1) to get the pupils in the language and use their creativity to tell a story.

(1.2) To promote English environment in the school.

2. Objectives
(2.1) The Story Telling competition is to encourage the pupils to develop their speaking skills
and build their confidence in using the English language.

3. Duration of the programme

(3.1) The duration of the story telling competition is about 2 days.

(3.2) each pupils are to present their story for 10 minutes.

4. Target Group

(4.1) The story telling competition is mainly for the excellent and average pupils in year 3 ,
year 4, year 5 and year 6.

5. Implementation of programme.

(5.1) The story telling competition was held on the 9th and 10th of March 2011 at the school’s
hall in conjunction of the English Speaking month in the school. The school hall was made of
year 5 and year 6 classes. The competition was organized by the English panel of the school. The
participants were mainly from Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils. Each class has to send 3 participants to
compete in the competition so there was 12 participants altogether. Each participant is given 10
minutes to tell their story. The story chosen must be within the pupil’s ability. Pupils who
participate in the competition have only one week to prepare themselves. The story telling
competition was divided into two categories that is the average pupil’s category and the excellent
pupil’s category. The winners were also divided into their own category. The winners of the
competition will represent the school to the story telling competition which was held in Bau. The
winners that day was 2 pupils from Year 3, 1 from year 6, 3 from year 4 and 1 from year 5 and
all of them represent the school to the story telling competition which was held in Bau.

6. Strength

The strength of the story telling competition is that the pupils are able to tell their story according
to what they have read fairly and also the pupils are able to express themselves and memorized
the story that they read. The pupils also showed their creativity in telling the stories. The pupils
have prepared well using costumes that they have made with their teachers. Each participant was
able to finish their stories in time. The story telling competition also has made some
improvement in the pupils speaking and it will encourage them to be more involved in the
language while they are in the class.

7. Weaknesses

(7.1) Pupils are not given much time to prepare themselves for the competition.

(7.2) The time limit for the pupils to tell their story is too short.

(7.3) The competition is not open for the lower classes. E,g. Year 1 and year 2.

(7.4) The place of the competition is not suitable.

(7.5) The participants are not given the freedom to choose their own story.

8. Suggestion

(8.1) give enough time for the pupils to prepare themselves like 3 weeks before the competition.

(8.2) time limit for the story telling competition should be longer. E.g. 20 minutes.

(8.3) the competition should have participants from lower classes.

(8.4) choose a better place for the competition not a small and crowded class rooms.

(8.5) participants should be given freedom to choose their own stories this will enable them to be
more confidence in telling the story.

(8.6) ask the pupils to create their own ideas and creativity in telling the story because this will
make the story told more interesting and exciting to listen to.

9. Recommendation

My recommendation for this programme is that the story telling competition should took place in
a suitable place. Pupils should be given more time and freedom to tell their stories. Teachers
should also involve those who are not so good in English because this will get them more
involve in the language and will also boost their confidence in learning the language. Teachers
also should give the pupils more freedom to choose their own stories or the stories that they like
and interested in this will enable the pupils to concentrate more because they choose their own
story according to their interest. Teacher should also make their own small competition in class
during the English lesson to enable them to choose which pupil that would represent their class
during the story telling competition.

Conclusion

In my opinion when I write this report I found out that story telling competition is one of the best
way to make our pupils get involved in the language. Moreover our pupils can develop their
English language by learning from stories. Pupils also have the ability to develop their creativity
by letting them the freedom to choose the story that they like and by letting them make their own
style of telling the story. In other words let the pupils do what they want to do and let them
choose what story they want to read but with the guidance of the teacher this will give them more
confidence and ability to speak and learn the language. In this way we could observe on how
they have learn the language. So to conclude my report I found out that this story telling
programme that was implemented in my school is one of the best method use to get the pupils to
learn, develop and get involved in English language and also it can boost confidence in the
pupils to speak the English language without feeling ashamed of themselves if they make a small
mistake because like people say practice makes perfect.
B. Choral speaking competition report

Choral speaking is an entertaining way to learn and to improve the language and it also can help
pupils to learn the language through teamwork. In addition it is an important tool for pupils to
improve their language skills. Choral Speaking is the interpretation of poetry or prose by a
group, comprising anything from half a dozen to a hundred speakers. It involves a full and varied
use of the individual voices that make up the group.
1. Aims
1.1 The competition aims at encouraging and increasing the usage of English among
pupils.
1.2 The competition also aims at getting pupils involved and interest in the usage of
English language.
2. Objectives
2.1 The competition objective is to build confidence in pupils to speak, render, memorize
and express in English.
2.2 The competition will also give pupils to work in a group and help each other in
learning the language.
3. Duration
3.1 The duration of the competition is one day.
3.2 Each group is given around 15 minutes.
4. Target Group
4.1 pupils in upper classes Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.
4.2 Pupils who can excel in English and average pupils.
5. Report on implementation of programme
The choral speaking competition was held on the 16 of March 2011 in conjunction of the
English Month in the school and it involves the upper level pupils who are in Year 4,
Year 5 and Year 6. The competition was organize by the English panel. It was held inside
the class of year 5 and Year 6. Each class are given 2 topics to discuss and present during
the competition. On the day of the competition each class present the topic that have
given to them for about 15 minutes. The first class to enter the frame is year 5. Then year
4 and last of all is year 6. Each class gave a fine and excellent performance although there
are a little bit of uncharacteristic mistakes but overall the competition went on smoothly.
The winner of the choral speaking competition that day goes to year 5 and they get the
chance to represent the school to the choral speaking competition which was held in Bau.
Overall the competition went on smoothly from the beginning till the end of the
competition. All the pupils and teachers give their cooperation and support during the
competition.
6. Strength
6.1 pupils gave full support and cooperation
6.2 pupils are able to produce a good level of choral speaking
6.3 time limit is enough for the participants
6.4 every participants are able to finish their topic in time
7. Weakness
7.1 pupils are given limited time to prepare
7.2 the competition stage is not suitable
7.3 pupils are not given the freedom to express themselves.
7.4 Pupils are not given the freedom to choose the topic on their own.
8. Suggestion
8.1 pupils should be given more time to prepare
8.2 pupils should be given the freedom to choose the topic that they want to present
8.3 the competition should involve the lower level of classes. E.g. Year 2 and Year 3
8.4 participant should be given time enough to present. Lets say instead 15 minutes give
the participant 20 minutes to present.
9. Recommendation
9.1 the competition should be held in a suitable and comfortable place.
9.2 Give the pupils the freedom to choose their own topic because this will enable them
to work closely in a group.
9.3 Let the pupils use their own ideas and creativity to present their work/topic.
9.4 Work closely and guide the pupils but don’t help just guide.
10. Conclusion
10.1 my conclusion about the choral speaking competition implemented in the school
is another type of method in order to get the pupils to be involve and make the pupils
interested in learning the language. This type of programme will enable the pupils to
work closely in a group and in groups they will be able to communicate and help each
other in learning the language. Nevertheless without effort from the teachers
involved this programme could not be done smoothly and successfully. This
programme is very useful and it is one type of method that can make pupils become
interested and get involved in the language because during the preparations before the
competition pupils will only speak in English and they have a little time to
communicate in other language. Although this programme may have uncharacteristic
mistakes or fault it is only technically but overall this programme is successful and
pupils gain benefit from it.
My opinion after this programme was implemented pupils will surely be interest to
know when is the next competition will be held. It is because they are excited and
interested in learning the language. Before I close my report I would assist and give
my suggestion to the teachers involved in this programme. Let the pupils work on
their own and in groups teachers just monitor and correct the mistakes that the pupils
make and guide them.
