A 1. Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions. (1X5=5)

Once a fisherman caught a very big fish in his net. When he cut it open, he found a lovely diamond ring
in it. He thought of presenting this ring to the king who he hoped would give him a big reward. So, he
took the ring and reached the king’s palace. He presented the ring to the king, and said, “My Lord, I
found it inside a fish when I cut it open.”

As soon as the King saw the ring he remembered everything – Kanwa Muni’s cottage, the beautiful
Shakuntala, his marriage with her, and the ring he had given her at the time of parting. How sorry the
king was to have treated Shakuntala so badly. He at once sent messengers in all directions to try to find
Shakuntala, but in vain.

At last the king himself went out to find her. One day, as he was riding through the forest, he saw a
handsome boy, boldly playing with a lioness and her cub. His name was Bharat ‘That he is a brave boy.
He looks like me. He must be my own son, “ said the king to himself.

A 1. In spite of all the honours that are heaped upon him. Pasteur, as has been said, remained simple at
heart. Perhaps, the imagery of his boyhood days, when he drew the familiar scenes of his birth place,
and the longing to be a great artist, though after his sixteenth year he abandoned the brush for ever like
every artist worth, he put his whole soul and energy into his work, and it was this energy that in the end
wore him out. For to him each sufferer was something more than just a case that was to be cured he
looked upon the fight against hydrophobia as a battle, and he was absorbed in his determination to win.
The sight of injured children, particularly, moved him to an indescribable extent. He suffered with his
patients, and yet he would not deny himself a share in that suffering. His greatest grief was when sheer
physical exhaustion made him give up his active work

In India, cities are more cancer prone than rural areas. In the early 1990’s, we expected one out of 10 –
15 urban Indians to get cancer in their lifetime, that is every second or third family would have to face
this disease. This is party due ti high levels of benzene in the air and also that the metros are exposed to
high levels of pesticides in their foods. In order to check the steady growth of cancer in the country the
government shall have to give priority to preventive action.
