EAB 1123 Vector Calculus

Tutorial 1
1. Find a vector that has the same direction as 5i −7 j and is (a) three times its length,
and (b) one-third its length.
2. For what numbers c are the vectors <c, 2> and <c, -8> perpendicular?
3. Find
(a) the angle between u and v ,
(b) the scalar projection of u in the direction of v , and
(c) the vector projection of u in the direction of v ,
where u = i + j + k and v = 5 j − 3k .
4. A force F = 2 i + j − 3k is applied to a space craft with velocity v = 3i − j. Express
F as a sum of a vector parallel to v and orthogonal to v .
5. Let u = 5 i − j + k , v = j − 5 k and w = −15 i + 3 j − 3k . Which vectors if any, are
(a) parallel? (b) perpendicular?
Give reasons for your answers.
6. Find a vector perpendicular to the plane passing through points P(1, 0,0), Q(0, 2, 0)
and R(0, 0, 3).
7. Find the volume of the parallelepiped with adjacent edges OP, OQ, and OR, and the
points are P(1, 3, -2), Q(2, 4, 5) and R(-3, -2, 2). Find the volume of the pyramid with
vertices P, Q, and R.
8. Determine whether or not the four given points A, B, C, and D are coplanar. If not,
find the volume of the pyramid with four points as its vertices given that its volume is
one-sixth that of the parallelepiped spanned by AB, AC, and AD. Points are
A(13, -25, -37), B(25, -14, -22) and C(24, -38, -25), and D(26, 10, -19).
9. A wrench having 30cm long lies along the positive y-axis and grips a bolt at the
origin. A force is applied in the direction of 0,3,−4 at the end of the wrench. What
is
the magnitude of the force, in Newton, needed to supply a torque of 100joules to the
bolt.
