Family Night Activities

June 3, 2011 Calendar:

GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING!

The goal of this activity is to help your kids get a little taste of how much God knows and how
little we know in comparison. There are a lot of ways to illustrate this. Choose one or more of
the suggestions listed below, or come up with your own creative activity! If you try something
different, we would love to hear about it!

Suggestions:
Option #1: The rest of the story…
Preparation:
1. Gather a storybook your kids haven’t read. You can buy it or check it out of the local
library. It needs to be short enough so you can read it during the course of the
evening.
2. Read the book yourself beforehand so you know the ending.
3. Put the book in a bag so the kids won’t be able to see them.
4. Snacks.

Begin the evening with fun snacks and then settle down for story time.

Before pulling the book from the bag, ask the kids if they know what story you’re going
to read (hopefully they won’t know). Ask: Why don’t you know? Ask: Who does know?
(You and God!)

Bring out the storybook and show the kids the cover. Ask them if they know what it’s
about. They may be able to figure out some of it based on the picture or the title but
they won’t know the details.

Read half the story and then put the book down. Ask the kids who knows how it will
end? Even if they guess correctly ask: Are you 100% sure? Do you positively know how
it ends or are you guessing? Let’s see if you’re right!

Read the rest of the story. Suggest to your kids that we’re not always right when we try
to guess how a story ends, but God is. God already knows the ending to every story
ever written!

Bringing it to a close:

1
Google did some research and they estimate that there are 129,864,880 books that
have been written. This does not include 2nd or revised editions. That’s a lot of books!
God knows every word in every book, no matter what language it’s written in! Imagine
knowing all that! Can you believe all that knowledge doesn’t even begin to scratch the
surface of God’s knowledge! God is definitely the smartest!

Read Colossians 2:3

In Him lie all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

The verse doesn’t say “most of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” but it says
“all.” God knows it all! Aren’t you glad?

Pray together and thank God for great storybooks! Thank Him for the comfort it gives
that He knows everything there is to know.

Option #2: Let’s make a story…

Preparation:
This is a very fun game for all ages! The only preparation needed is to have some snacks
ready.

Object of the game: Create a story using everyone’s input.

Rules: Have a parent begin the first game.

1. Person who is going first must begin with, “Once upon a time….” Finish the
sentence however you’d like. (i.e. “Once upon a time there was a big ugly
earthworm right in the middle of Aunt Ce Ce’s peach pie. When she saw it she…”)
Player may only give 2 or 3 sentences. Player may end it with a hanging sentence
like the one above.
2. Players will take turns adding to the story. Each turn allows a player to add 2-3
sentences to the story and must pick up where the last player left off.
3. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes (depending on how long you think your kids will be
able to go with the story). When the timer goes off, the next player must bring the
story to an end.

Play the game a couple of times. Once they get the hang of it the story will become
crazier and more bizarre!

Bringing it to a close:
Who knew how our stories were going to end?

Was anyone frustrated when the story took a turn you weren’t planning on?

Here’s something even more amazing! God not only knows everything that’s ever been
written, He knows everything that hasn’t been written about yet. He even knew how
our stories were going to end! The twists and turns didn’t surprise Him because He
already knew what each of us was going to say! God is definitely the smartest!

Option #3: Library of knowledge…

Preparation:
This one requires a trip to the library. You can pack the snacks for a stop at the park on
the way home or you can stop for ice cream and chat about what you learned about
God.

At the library take your kids on a little tour of the books. Note the different subjects,
authors and even languages some are written in! Every now and then, randomly pull a
book from the shelf. Ask if any of the kids knows what’s in the book. Have them ask a
librarian how many books the library has. Say to your kids: “That’s a lot of books and a
lot of knowledge!”

Let each child check out a couple books to bring home.

Bringing it to a close:
While enjoying snacks or ice cream, talk about what they saw in the library. How many
books? Ask your kids if they think they could ever know everything that’s in all the
books in the library.

have been written. This does not include 2nd or revised editions. That’s a lot of books!
