OR

Write an expository letter from Brutus to Caesar explaining to

his good friend the reasons why he has joined the conspiracy
and why he has actually had a hand in his friend’s murder.

Dear Caesar,

First of all, let me tell you that you are my best friend in
the world. I have been able to tell you anything for most of my
life, and I am so, so sorry that I joined this conspiracy against
you. I swear I would have confided in you if I could. My reasons
were good, and if you could read this explanation, I’m sure you
would forgive me.
As I’ve already said, its not that I loved you less, it’s that I
loved Rome more. I would never have done this out of rage! I
know that is what people will think when they see the evidence,
but the conspiracy (Casca, Cassius, myself, and several others)
felt that your ambition was dangerous to our country. I know
that Caesar the man would never do anything against Rome,
but Caesar the ruler might be tempted by the power he would
wield.
Cassius persuaded me on the day that you defeated
Pompey that you might be dangerous. At first I wasn’t sure that
I wanted to join him, because I couldn’t see myself being such a
double-crossing traitor. Then I realized that if you were in my

position, you would have done the same. If you had seen
yourself, I’m sure you would agree with my choice!
You need to know that I love you, and killing you was the
hardest thing I’ve ever done. I am so sorry, but I hope you now
at least understand my reasons!
